I'm gonna buy a laptop soon, and I pretty much want the best possible in all aspects. I can spend pretty much as much as I need to.
Was looking at Alienware, but I'm not too impressed by it so far. Only a 15 inch display and stuff.
To see the Alienware I was thinking about getting, go to
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/area-51m.aspx
and put in " goblin_man@absolutchaos.net-440241" in the retreive configuration popup.
Anyone know anything about Sony, Dell, etc?
Once again, I'm looking for the best of the best.

Your gonna spend all that money and not get a wireless network card?
Shit man.. if i had a laptop like that I'd go wireless for sure, nothing beats mobility around the house.

sunk, i didn't load up your page there but here's my thoughts.
i'm an alienware fanboy just because i know soo many people who work there.
the problem with the laptops is that the models that use the real processors, not the mobility processors, get VERY VERY hot. there's been a few cases of keyboards melting. these models are also very large. they're not laptops as much as a portable gaming station. but then if you just wanted a portable gaming station, just get the shuttle case.
the normal, mobility processor laptops are decent. still large though. if you wanna know anything else, get ahold of me in chat or reebo, he still works for AW.
if i were to buy my own laptop I would get a Toshiba probably. they have great looking cases and good systems. i think the only downside to toshiba is that they don't allow you to customize systems, but i could be wrong.
of course, there's always dell =)

Lookin at the 17inch Powerbook now.
17 inch display, DVD burner, backlit keyboard, longest battery life out there, etc...and 70 bucks a month.

Aleinware: Way the hell overpriced for what you get. The worst bang for your buck and really a pain in the ass to have it worked on. Much worse than Dell (which isn't always a picnic either).
Powerbook: may as well get one of those Fisher Price kid's 'computers.' You'll be frustrated with it's lack of functionality in three weeks flat. Overpriced too.
Toshiba: Probably the way to go, it's the best compromise between quality, functionality, and affordability. You won't be disappointed.
I wouldn't recommend HP or Compaq (they're really the same btw), and I think Sony is a bit overpriced. That whole 'Sony makes quality products and that's why they charge more' myth needs to go... we get alot of those in the tech shop!
I've sold laptops off and on for 7 years (some of you were in gradeschool lol) and I'm just callin' em like I see em.

We use a lot of Dell laptops at work, and I like them. Haven't had any failures or problems in the last 8 months on any of them as far as I know, and we've got probably 25 or so in constant use.
Depends what you want it for, too. That system you're looking at is 9.5 pounds. Lot of power, but a lot of weight, and maybe not great battery life. Also the loaded ones tend to run hot, and the fans are always going (= more noise, battery consumption). If you're going to be doing a lot of gaming on it you need the power, but if you just want a system to have with you all the time, maybe you'd want something a little more basic.
For wireless, I'd see if there are any good ones out yet using Intel's new Centrino chipset. We have a few, but I haven't played with them so I don't know how good they are. But they supposedly use a lot less battery power (like a tenth) for the wireless ethernet, which is a drawback of the first generation cards. If you do get get a separate wireless card, get one based on the Lucent Orinoco chipset (Dell TruMobile for one, plus they used to sell under the Lucent name - probably a few other companies too). They perform vastly better than other cards.

Dell's aren't bad, but they can be a pain to have repaired (and ALL laptops require service eventually, fragile things).
I totally forgot about IBM... they suck, though. Good call, stay away from 'em.
About the Powerbooks... seriously, you won't like it. They don't offer you anything you can't get with a Dell, Toshiba, etc. and the moment you find a program you can't load on your Powerbook (which should take all of about 2 days), you've screwed yourself. A Powerbook is not the laptop that best fits your needs right now.

All notebooks suck. (they aren't called laptops anymore by the way)
Toshibas are good, but suck when trying to get parts/repaired.
Dell is ok, for price. Easy to get repaired, which you will have to do often (Thing that breaks the most on Dell's , the battery.)
Unlike the other fools above. I like IBM Thinkpads. Priced higher. But best warranty/support. (my 486 thinkpad still works today)
Powerbook?? Puke.
If you haven't already, goto one of those overpriced computer stores/box stores. Try them all. Pick the one you want. Order it online.
And the MOST important thing. BUY A REAL f*****g MOUSE.
