My grandpa gave me his old Toshiba laptop yesturday. He bought a new one because the screen doesn't work on it anymore... You can tell Windows starts up and all that, because sounds play and what not, but the screen stays black..

He took it to (insert electronics store here) and they didnt tell him what was wrong with it; only that it would be 400-500 bucks to fix.

Any ideas on what it may be? The thing is 4 or 5 years old, and rather then just toss it, I figured I can find a way to fix it or make use of it somehow.

you could always just hook it up to a monitor and use it as a desktop of sorts

assuming it's 4-5 years old it's probably no higher than 300Mhz

$500 on a 300Mhz used laptop is pretty pointless

It's 266 Mhz =p

and ya, thats why he gave it to me; 500 bucks is almost 1/3 the original price.

Is there anything I can do, not someone else, that may fix it ? Or anything you can think of that may have caused the problem

There should be a reset button on the bottom of them system, you might try that.

Sounds like the screen may be broken. If the LCD is broken, forget it, it's gonna cost you way too much to fix (but you might use it with a CRT monitor). If the LCD is very dark, the backlight may be burned out, and you could fix it for a couple hundred easy.
