VANCOUVER -- The Conservative justice critic says the party will stand behind its promise to give Canada's border guards guns, a day after two murder suspects from California made a run for the border before they were stopped in a shootout.
"It's simply a practical matter of how soon these officers can be trained and the firearms issued to them,'' said Vic Toews, the Conservative MP who served as justice critic in Opposition.
"That's our commitment and I trust our minister will do exactly that.''
Toews said in an interview Wednesday he did not relish the sight of Canadian border guards leaving their posts as the gunmen approached the border.
"I think it does nothing for our national image. I find it very disturbing that our officers felt compelled to leave because of this threat to their personal safety,'' he said from his Manitoba riding of Provencher.
"I understand their concerns very well and don't fault them. What surprises me is that the former government refused to properly equip our officers.''
British Columbia's solicitor general said he thinks it is time to arm border guards.
"I think they need to be armed,'' John Les said outside a cabinet meeting at the provincial legislature in Victoria. "We sometimes have some not very nice people who want to try and get into our country.''
The unarmed Canadian border guards abandoned their posts at four crossings along the B.C. border on Tuesday when they heard the murder suspects were coming their way.
A spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency said the guards have the legal right to refuse to work if they believe they are in imminent danger.
The two men were apprehended at the Peace Arch crossing on the American side of the border by U.S. law enforcement officers after a high-speed chase down Interstate 5 in Washington state.
One of the suspects was injured in the shootout with police. Both men are in federal custody awaiting extradition from Washington to California.
The shootout and police investigation closed the border crossing between Surrey, B.C., and Blaine, Wash., for hours on Tuesday.
There has been a debate in Vancouver area about which law enforcement officers should have guns after guards on the public transit system were trained and equipped with firearms last year. Concerns were raised that adding guns to the mix would escalate violence.
Toews said it doesn't.
As attorney general of Manitoba, Toews oversaw the arming of Natural Resources officers.
"It enhanced their effectiveness as peace officers,'' he said.
He envisions peace officers working together with RCMP and in exceptional circumstances with border guards.
He noted that in many rural areas, border guards work alone and RCMP offices are miles away.
"On Nov. 6 we had a person cross into Canada in my riding by simply pointing a gun at a lone official who was there, an unarmed woman. She stepped back and let the individual cross the border.''
The criminal was eventually captured and not by Canadian authorities. The man wasn't caught until he tried to return back the U.S. on a bus, long after he had got rid of his gun north of the border, said Toews.

I agree. It is pretty ridiculous that Canadian customs agents don't really have the means to protect their country from the lawless "I have the constitutional right to bear an automatic weapon", gun-toting dumbfucks that are being manufactured by the millions south of the border.
The Canadian border guards are "armed" with pepper spray and batons. If they'd have been issued hockey sticks, who knows, they might have stuck around.

Um....the perps were hispanic and arabic. Both are suspected of being illegal aliens. They were wanted for the murder of a cab driver.
The only people there with legal guns were the sheriffs that saved the wimp canadians lives.
Who knows, maybe they jumped the border from canada...

LOL That made me remember a story a friend told me, cause he grew up in Canada on how useless the law is there. Something about a train ride and they tried to arrest some people but they just shoved the cops off and went about their business.

I don't make the laws here but many are just as stupid in the US. Our boarder guards do need to have weapons and they need to be more of them at the boarders for sure.

Yeah but our cops will beat someone if they look at them wrong! Thats a show of force to keep the normal people scared of the law! You see a cop you never know if thats the one who will take out hsi stick and start to beat you in the head cause he is in "god mode"!

I hear a lot about canada, but that's cause I'm here.
I don't hear much about luxemberg, lithuania, switzerland, ireland, england, monaco, etc etc etc either, but that's probably because peace and tranquility aren't as news worthy as death and destruction.
There are 2 reasons america is always heard of:
1) They are our neighbours, so parts of our society are intermingled.
2) The world is like a party, and most of the people can handle their alcohol and drugs, so you don't really notice them. America is like the drunk guy, you know he's going to do something stupid you're just not sure when, so you keep watching him.

America isn't the star of planet earth, only americans think that.
You have the best military, that's it (and even that is debateable). China could ruin your country in 20 minutes without ever launching a single nuke, or fire a single bullet.
Once BRIC or any other of the big global alliances start becoming established, the fact that you've p****d off a lot of other countries will flex their muscle. Karma always goes 360.

#1 - You are OUR neighbor, we are not yours. If we want you to stop being our neighbor we can and will make that happen. Since you guys are corky and provide us with some great humor we probably won't be doing that soon, but its always on the table.

China could cripple your economy in a heartbeat. No questions asked, your stock market would plummet, interest rates sore, and your dollar would become the equivalent of the 1940's german mark.
Does China need you? Sure, but you need china at least at much.
You might hear a lot about england once in a while, but as much as you hear about france. And it's not that these other countries don't matter, it's just that their local news isn't of interest to us.

Who has a better military is debatable on so many different levels. The US military is like The Syndicate (to break it down into EQ terms). They have the most, therefore they must be the best?
Canadian pilots are some of the best trained in the world, yet our airforce is weaker than the states due to sheer numbers.
You can argue back and forth which is better 'til you're blue in the face, the correct answer is there is no "best" military in the world, just different levels of training, recruitment, and/or preparedness.
As for the border guards, well, they abandoned their post, I'd probably write them up, and likely suspend them. They knew that this kind of situation could happen when they were on duty, no matter how unlikely, they needed to keep their heads about them and do their jobs. Yes, it turned into a debacle, and yes, the Washington state law enforcement handled it swiftly. It's over now, and the only shame involved is if nothing is learned from it.

You hear about France for the same reasons you hear about Canada: Its funny, and makes for great late night talk show monologues.
No you are our neighbors. We own Canada, we just rent it out. We've let you have it for so long that you think you actually own it. Please don't make us evict you .
If China and US went at it, we would come out on top. Our trade centers got f*****g blown up recently (if you forgot) and we didn't even go into a depression, America stood more united than ever and came through.
If we did dive into a depression guess what that means. We pull all our troops back from all over the world. The world starts to fight b/c we are not policing them anymore, "Hello World War!" "Allo Govna". We sell the world weapons make a shit load of money then when we feel like it go back in and stop the war. Its all been done before.
