|
|
|
I'm running Gnome/fedora.
I'm wondering what others are using for their workstations on other linux boxes.
My list goes something like:
Gaim - icq/aim/yahoo/etc
Xmms - winamp
xchat - like better than Gaims
mplayer - WMP replacement
gkrellm - cpu temp/drive stats
Evolution - Email/calandar
gvidm - change screen res fast/ez
sysinfo - quick look at what versions/hardware you have
Open Office - word/xl/etc
Anything cool out there for workstations that I'm missing?
word up

I think people who install Linux are unique rebels fighting the mega corporation. higher quality programs with better support aren't worth your self dignity, fight the good fight Kireol!

more or less yes. and now runs most windows games flawlessly
MS is considering buying redhat. i wonder if they'll start to incorporate linux into windows. doubt it though.
linux is mostly virus and spyware free though due to most people run windows so that's where the energy is devoted to.

Open source applications are almost always better than retail stuff. Where are you getting your information from?

He's right about the support at least. Windows caters to the PC-illiterate. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just that Billy Gates does payout $$$ for a warehouse full of Pakistanis to talk on telephones to people like Bobbi Sue Bob that just bought a Kmart-PC, helping her install shit, connect to the intraweb and post her pic on Hotornot.com

omgomg... I just recently (last 2 months) started using k3b.
I now use my linux workstation to burn EVERYTHING. k3b puts nero to shame.. It simply rocks my box.
Even donated $50.00 to em.

Nero pales in comparsion to K3B. I can't donate cash right now but I do try and help out on the mailing list and Sebastian Trueg who is one of the project leads is just a really cool guy.

I work at a university. We do not implement firewalls and application devices, do to it being a learning instution and the sharing of knowledge.. Its an open policy that most schools actually follow. so it is up to me to protect my equipment at the machine lvl not at a border level because I only get single ethernet runs.
It sucks but its the rules.. there is a border of course, I have no control over the border.. If I was given my own subnet, then I could implement something like that . So therefore I have no border but the University does, they implement a few things but nothing to protect me from viruses and hack attempts from on campus...
