|
|
|
I'm thinking about spending some big bucks on an LCD monitor. The one down side to them is the low resolution and any desire for a high resolution monitor is a 19"+ (1280x1024) and a 20" goes up to 1600x1200.
Who makes a good LCD flat panel? Are they better picture wise / quality / for gaming?
Thanks

Buy a CRT and put the rest of your $ into a 36 month CD. Thank me in 3 years!

| Quote: | | For those of you willing to move on from the CRT world into the world of high end flat panels we recommend the Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" LCD. Granted, the UltraSharp does not perform as well as our CRT recommendation this month, but for a high-end LCD, its performance and size is exceptional and the price is reaching near affordability. The monitor supports up to 1600x1200 pixel resolution, 16ms response time, 250 cd/m2 brightness, and a 400:1 contrast ratio making it a top choice for high end LCD buyers. At just under $1000 it's easy to see why we didn't include it this month as our main selection, but price aside, it is currently one of our favorite LCD monitors. |

Samsung makes great LCDs.
I got a Samsung SyncMaser 170MP 4 or 5 years ago (using it as a secondary monitor now), still beats some of the newer LCDs. (17'' 1280x1024, no dead pixels, sharp colors and (like all new LCDs) no lag or ghosting in gameing - was about $4,000 back then though.. don't think they make them anymore. Has a plug for my PS2 and I can watch TV on it (with picture in picture) so still pretty decent)
Primary Monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 193T (about a year old, $700 or so back then) 19'' 1280x1024, 700:1 contrast etc.
Sony has about the same picture quality as Samsung, but I never got one of theirs. They make the best plasma displays though.
New LCDs are about the same quality as CRTs - they still lack the very high resolutions, but you can find LCDs with 1600x1280 already.
In the end it comes down to is cost vs space & look. You pay for not having to stare at a large box that takes up half your desk. If you don't care about that, you're better off with a CRT.

the viewable space of an lcd is about 2 inches larger then that of a CRT listed as the same size, so if you're usedto 21inch CRTs an 19inch LCD should do yah bout the same, and they do make 19s that suport 1600x1200 native.
Personaly I use a 17inch samsung syncmaster 710n, and it just owns the hell out of my old 21inch CRT NEC monitor. 600:1 contrast with a 12ms refresh time and native 1280x1024 is perfect for me, granted I can't run 1600x1200 but my gfx card could only really handle doing that on older games.
*edit*
best of all, one can be had for less then $400, which is resonable for someone who wouldn't have already shelled out that much for the latest vid card that could run things 1600x1200

If your big in FPS games... or well any game you best off sticking with a CRT. LCDs look like shit in their non native resolution, and face it games are developed and pushed out faster then video card technology is. Most decent LCD's are native at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. A lot of gamers least the hardcore ones are buying the 6800GTs and x800s in mass, but those cards are going to be shit in 6-12months when games are released that even push these newer cards to their limits, forcing you to play in smaller resolutions (usually 1024x768) to keep optimal framerates.
Simple unless your planning on upgrading your video card every time the new high end is released go for a LCD. Other wise stick with a good CRT with nice high and stable refresh rates at higher resoltions.
If your 100% on getting a LCD, Samsung makes a 17" 1280x1024 LCD with a 12ms response time, which is your best bet. (Krumble linked it)

crt is still way better unless your really hurting for space, ghosting is still noticable even in the 12 ms panels sometimes (its not bad at all or even really annoying but you will notice it on occassion) dead pixel problems still plague a good number of panels (30% prolly chance to get a dead pixel) backlight leaks imo are the worst problem, even if you dont have leaks in the corners like alot of panels do you will still get washed out blacks.. black repo on lcd is just shit so be warned if you play alot games are night you will notice it.
Overall lcd are ok, samsung and benq imo are the best producers.. nec mitsubishi too.. be warned tho >16 ms panels are only 16 bit not 24 color.. and even some 16 ms are... Pros of LCD are sharp colors, no need to worry about screen savers, less power, size, downsides are poor blacks, slow response times still, bad reso abilities, low resos...
If you decide to get one dell is a good online vendor because they have 21 days satisfaction garuntee so np with backlight leaks or dead pix... imo the best way to get um is still in the store where you can see it before you buy it tho.

LCD's suck, get a good CRT. I reccomend the NEC 22" (20" viewable), it's bright and hands down the best monitor out on the market (I'm running two on my desktop now).
The new Nforce 4 Mobo's are comming out soon that support SLI, so having the best graphics card every year won't really be necessary, as you can just buy 2 GT's and get twice the performance of one!
