I found this full grown black bird with small places of red and gold feathers under its wings and it cant fly. It was just laying in the road so I picked it up and took in my backyard where it just sits and sleeps or walks around. It doesnt open its eyes a whole lot and when it does they look all cloudy. When it put it in my hand high up it flys away but only for couple of feet. At the moment its in large box with some food and water. Any suggestions as to whats wrong with it, I looked around and didnt see any BB gun wounds or anything. I didnt want to leave it in the road to get run over. Suggestions as what to do with it beside shoot it.

well in dogs when there eyes are cloudy it means they are blind or can hardly see

i am not a bird man but he may be blind and does not feal the need to open his eyes

it could of just happend or it could of happend over time till the point he cant see

if you plan to keep him take him to a vet to check for deseas or what ever

birds carry lots of shit

i know for a fact birds don't like rice, and if they do... well they better not have any.

but if you do end up feeding it some rice its gonna give you a nice lesson in explosives.

Gah, take it to the vet.
And handling birds (or any stray animals, for that matter) can be um...yuck. If they've had any contact with carrion, feces, or the gods know what, etc...they tend to carry TONS of germs/diseases.

Box, leave it alone put it in a safe palce from cats and let time pass nothing you can do.

Prob an injured wings if tomorrow its not gone it will die.

Just dont go to the animal care service they will make you pay just to take care of it and when you wil be gone they wont even waste a sec on a bird.

You did what you could.

Mael has a point. The vet COULD be expensive, and if you aren't planning on keeping the bird or if it is beyond healing, you could have a helluva bill..

Of course, money is paper...it burns.
Do what you feel right doing, hon.

Even if he pays , they will tell him : yes we will check the bird thank you bye bye! very nice action Sir!

Once he will be gone ...they will prob trow the bird in the oven. Same for most dogs and cats they only waste their precious time on the ones that have hope to be sold etc...

in all honesty the bird probably has West Nile Disease
HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS BTW!!!!
Black Birds tend to be the ones most effected by it at this point and yes it's becoming a bigger problem this year than it was last year

As far as the bird goes...
Call you're local Fish, Game and Wildlife people...State level.
They will hook you up with an animal rehab center and ask you to take him/her there
If it's not West Nile, they will get it back on it's feet and heading where it's supposed to be
If it is West Nile chances are the little bugger isn't going to last much longer anyway, but they will want to watch it and see if there's anything they can do to help, as this is a problem across the country that's killing thousands of animals each season

Good Luck hun and please call Fish and Game[/b][/code]

All black? Gold and Red Spots on the edge of the wing? It's what my father refers to as a Grackal. A large type of blackbird. It's a nuisance. Put it on the ground, crush its head with your foot. There are millions just like it.

Hobbet.... look at this

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/birdspecies.htm

It lists the common grackle as a bird identified as being hit with WNV. But I'm not sure how up to date this info is.. where do you live?

If what Sab and Tam say is true.. it might make sense.

Just one small piece of info tho, may or may not have anything to do with your poor little friend.

west nile .. encephalitis? Is that the same thing?

Tam it also says WNV isn't transmitted by birds and is not, in fact transmitted by touching a dead or sick bird with it.

It's carried by infected mosquitos.

Birds are filthy little animals that carry many diseases other than just WNV. Take Sab's advice, crush the thing's head with your foot...or just throw it in a trashbag and forget about it.

prolly Paden...but not always. We have a cat who looks totally blind cause of infections when he was a kitten...
trust me he is NOT blind...dumb as a bag of hammers yes, but not blind LOL

The Wildlife Rehab places will actually take the lil birdie in and take care of it
Any more word on what happened to it?

I'm trying to identify that bird you've found. Its color markings have me puzzled and intrigued. But I'll have to have a more detailed desription first.

How big is this bird? Robin-sized? House Sparrow-sized?
What color are its Beak & Legs? Black, yellow, or pinkish?
What color is its Throat Patch if any?
What color is it just under the base of its Tail?
What shape is the end of its Tail? Rounded, forked, or square?
Are there color bars on it's Wings and what color are they?
What color is it's chest region (from under its chin to the base of the tail)?
Is it solid Black overall or does it have color streaks on it as well?

Sorry for all the questions, but we don't have many birds like the one you're describing out here in the great Northwest. I do hope it survives for it sounds like a truly spectacular specimen of bird.

Yah Grackals are nothing but noise mackin shit machines. My latest venture with them was ripping a nest of about 5 Babies ( almost big enough to fly ) out of a nest in a tree by my house and throwing them into my Pond while watching turtles pull them under and having a snack, and what the turtles didnt get my pellet gun did. I hate those birds.

You guys are all wrong. That bird is a native from China and carries Sars (hence thats why it can't fly and has cloudy eyes). Kill it quick before it spreads!

Bin Laden prolly brought it over here to cause bio terrorism.

I dont think the bird was a Grackle because it wasnt that big. It was very pretty. It ate a little and bathed in water which was funny looking but it did die yesterday. Clev saw it and suggested Oriole which sounds right to me. O well there must be 12 zillion more black birds out there.
