"I oppose abortion personally. I believe life does begin at conception."
-John Kerry
Ok, without getting into the abortion/murder argument, this raises a disturbing question. Regardless of whether or not you believe that abortion is murder, John Kerry does. Yet he has a history of voting for federal funding of abortions...all the while believing it to be murder. So I ask you this: What's up with that?

I'm not pro Kerry by any means, but his stance has historically been that while he personally doesn't believe in abortion, he feels that as public servant it's his job to ensure that people always have the right to make their own decision.
Personally, I think it's a text book Kerry position where he tries to straddle the line. The guy is a coward f**k.

It's definately very "politician" of him, but he obviously didn't think this through. How can you believe life begins at birth, and fund the killing of humans without expecting even pro-choicers to think you're f****d up. At least pro-choice people don't believe an embryo is a living human being.

I should note that I believe you should be able to abort a pregnancy during the first tri-mester, and after that no dice. I don't let it affect who I'm going to vote for, as I'm not really worried about Roe v. Wade ever being overturned, as it's been on the books for too long.

I don't agree with Kerry. Life for me didn't begin until I was self aware, and that didn't happen until I was around 4 months out of my mother.
That said it sounds like he's more about freedom of choice than protecting what he believes to be the start of life. Odd, yes and I think his statment is politicaly driven so he can get votes on both sides.
Since ultimately his outlook won't effect me I don't care.

you cant understand the concept that someone might find abortions repulsive, but not as repulsive as a women getting one in a back ally with a coat hanger?

Stupid argument, but that wasn't his reasoning. His reasoning was that, though he thinks abortion is murder, that he allows it anyway because he doesn't believe it's his place to vote according to that belief.

Kerry's job isn't to vote the way he feels. His job is to vote the way his constituents feel, or, barring that, vote in favor of the defining ideals of this country, in this case, freedom of choice.

Huh?
I thought politicians were supposed to vote the way they feel and believe, and it was our job to elect whichever one's views were most in line with our own. If all candidates attempted to please the majority 100% of the time, what would be the point of electing one candidate over the others?

Cuomo thought and voted the same way. He is Catholic and believed abortion was murder. But he believed that women had the right to choose, too. So he voted for funds.

no it's a politicians job to represent the people that elected them. That is why we chose representatives. To represent the way we feel.
