Glad I waited till the Holy Crusaders of the Dork Kingdom let the hype die down a little. I've read the hobbit and the trilogy about 3x, and was really looking forward.
As the final scene (sam and frodo walking off into the misty sunset) rolled up, i found myself mutters, "My god... what a piece of manufactured hollywood shit. They couldn't make a Cookie Cutter Blockbuster Template better except, I dunno, by adding.. hm.. I'm surprised I didn't hear any Enya."
Then the Enya music kicked in. I laughed my ass off.
It was "good" in the same way high school-run haunted house productions around Halloween time are "scary".

I didn't like it that much either. It was good, but now what the hype lead it to be.

actually, we all like to make fun of everything, theres a difference.
RP to many, is known as a place where nobody cares what you say, and if they do, you shouldn't care what they say back... RP prides itself as being the greatest/most random forum ever. at least it is compared to most other forums.

To be honest i hated the first LotR movie when i saw it in the theatre the first time. I had a bad seat and i saw it the first day, when it was really crowded. Even so, I felt that it didnt have the feeling of movies like willow back when i saw them as a kid. Something about the movie annoyed me, i just couldnt figure out why. The second time i saw it was at home, on dvd (the extended version). It was much better the second time, i had a chance to understand things a bit better plus there were less distractions. It's a good movie, but I never read the book so I dont know how well it stacks up.

The problem with the Lord of the Rings is that if you are at least a LITTLE familiar with the book, you probably have your own mental image of what shit needs to look like. This leads to one disappointment after another. It's just too easy to pick out all the things that were "wrong" with the movie. In my case this killed my enjoyment of the movie.
I still want to retch watching Arwen dodge Nazgul on horseback..
Or listening to Saruman pledge his loyalty to Barad-Dur..
It's enough to make me not want to watch it sometimes.

jesus...... As far is movies baised on books to this is about as good as it gets. They stayed true to the story like 95% of the time. Personaly i think i liked the movie more because i had read the books a few times and enjoyed them so much. Might not have been as good if i never read the books before and didn't enjoy the story so much. Was fun to see it on film.
I guess i didn't go into the theater expecting to see an exact replica of the books , maybe thats why i wasn't disapointed. Very hard to make a movie from a book and stay true to every detail. Even more so with three long books like these. They did a badass job of it though. A ton of dialogue is strait from the book , Golem was just like i had pictured him in my mind . the the battle in the dorf caves again was very much like i had pictured it in my head ...... How perfect can it be ?
If i had to pic one thing about this movie i loved best it was golem though. What they did with golem was astounding. He looked so real. not like starwars jar-jar kinda shit . Golem looked like a real creature. anamation was some of the best i have ever seen with him.

People tend to look at the books (LoTR, Hobbet) through rose colored glasses. Tolkien had a good story in his head, but couldn't tell it well to save his life. It's no great mystery why he never wrote anything else of note. His style (if you could call it that) was too bland and humorless, and he wrote his fair share of fluff to pad the story too. For instance, who here didn't roll their eyes and start skimming past his whole 'our birthdays equal a gross blah blah' crap at Bilbo's birthday? Thank GOD they didn't script that dialogue.
The movies are no better or worse than the books. Both have their faults.

Maybe thats because, as you pointed out, when you saw Willow, you were a kid. Kids are more accepting and have much more of a sense of wonder and excitement I think when watching a movie. They don't really concern themselves with what it *ought* to be according to their views, they just enjoy a movie for what it is.

I'm sorry Brash.. but, far from nitpicking, aligning Mordor and Isengard is more than a MINOR DETAIL. It's a whole SUBPLOT you are ruining by doing that.
It's as bad as having the Elvish army walk into Helm's Deep in part II.. my jaw dropped when I saw that.. THERE WAS NO SECOND ALLIANCE OF ELVES AND MEN... it happened for a reason!!
Also.. I don't know if they are going to leave out the final chapter, "The Scouring of the Shire" but the gift Galadriel gives to Sam (the mallorn seed surrounded by blessed soil) was a fairly significant detail to leave out. Again, as I have not seen The Return of the King I will wait to see how it turns out. If they leave it out, then it makes sense.. if not... it's an unfortunate detail to leave out because the significance of it is obvious at the end of RoTK.
My point : Galadriel giving Merry and Pippin daggers instead of belts = minor detail. Making Saruman serve Sauron = huge, glaring storyline flaw. Basically making Saruman "an army in service of" Mordor makes no sense in the movie.. if he didn't have his own agenda..... why did Merry and Pippin get dragged off to Isengard instinctively?
The part about Arwen just bothered me because I hate Liv Tyler and because putting her in that role took out Glorfindel whom I personally liked.

i didn't hate parts of the movie because they betrayed my personal image of what the book was about. i hated it because they did the typical hollywood b******t (teary-eyed music and s****y british accents).
GO READ MY OTHER REVIEW IT IS AMAZING IN ITS DEPTH AND COMMENTARY-ISM-ITION.
