This clown thinks now after he's totally ignored iraq for 3+ years that he can impose his will upon it. Now they think they can interfere in an internal decision by the Iraqi government?
All the while ignoring Dafur and Somalia.
Someone remind me just what purpose this money sink of an organisation serves other than allowing nations like syria and North Korea to be 'legitimized' by them?

Taken from the article:
| Quote: | | It is believed that the city holds 2,000 to 5,000 insurgents, who communicate with cell phones, carrier pigeons and flags. |
Stupid question, but couldn't they just shut off cell phone service in Iraq? Not like that's one of the top priorities there, and it would apparently disrupt terrorist organisation.

holy shit wouldnt it be badass if the U.N. went rogue on us over this and sent troops to defend Falluja? France and Russia would be all over that shit. France would issue each soldier a white flag, but they'd send troops just to spite us.

Wow, this was all yesterday? Mission Accomplished, hells yeah!
| Quote: |
- The bodies of 12 Iraqi civilians who had been kidnapped and then shot to death in the town of Latifiya were discovered Friday, Iraqi police sources said. Latifiya is about 30 miles south of Baghdad.
- A gas pipeline that supplied fuel for electrical power plants around the city of Kirkuk was damaged by a bomb Friday, cutting electricity to homes and businesses, police said. An improvised explosive device exploded on the pipeline in Bajwan, about six miles north of Kirkuk, police said.
- A U.S. soldier died and five others were wounded Friday as "the result of an indirect fire attack" on a base near Falluja, the U.S. military said. The death brings the number of U.S. military fatalities in the war to 1,128.
- In the Baquba region, north of Baghdad, insurgent attacks over the last 24 hours claimed the lives of three Iraqis. Two of the civilians killed were children who died when a mortar landed on their house near a police station. Three women were wounded.
- The humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders said it will stop working in Iraq because of escalating violence. The group has been there since December 2002. |

Well, let me start by saying I’m less of a fan of the UN than about 90% of the worlds population, but however being the pragmatist I am I still see uses in it.
1. Forum: The GA gives a place for all the little countries to complain and pass absolutely meaningless resolutions till their heart is content, while at the same time making them feel like they are important.
2. Legitimacy: Since the other permanent members all want to be able to do the same thing, the UN provides legitimacy for invading other countries to protect our economic interests. This is not a US only thing by _ANY_ stretch, watch wherever France goes as a peace keeping mission, 9 times out of 10 it’ll be a former colony of theirs. Without this blanket legitimacy we’d have to invade these countries on our own with out that blue helmet badge of authority that says “its okay”. Plus, honestly, its not like this slows us down if we wanna do something without the UN. We bumped off Afghanistan and Iraq without it.
3. Balance of Power: By being one of the permanent members of the only body within the UN with anything approaching ‘real’ power it allows us to make sure its not used against our interest. In the mid 90’s there was some discussion about hiring mercenaries, I shit you not mercenaries, to serve as UN Peacekeepers who would be soley responsible to the UN. For obvious reasons this got shot down, but its insane shit like that which makes stayin in worth doin.
Because we are the only super power left in the world we still have considerable wiggle room to do things that other members of the Security Council can’t do (again Iraq and Afghanistan). But by being in it and because of our power we can keep the Russians & Chinese (number 2 & 3) in check better. Without us, the chances of a “legitimate” UN resolution authorizing the invasion of Taiwan and occupation of Chechnya becomes closer to a possibility. While Chechnya really does mean d**k, I rather like it that the Russians have been distracted there for a decade now and show no signs of having their attention significantly diverted. Taiwan on the other hand is quite valuable and we don’t want the Chinese taking that back under direct control.
There is however a rather big problem and that is Kofi Annan and just how corrupt the guy and organization is. Annan, his kid, and the rest of’em scamming, are just downright incompetent at their corruption if its so blatant that it can’t be concealed to the point that its not worth investigating by a pack of Congressmen. Worse, Annan has chosen to make himself a personal enemy of the President, and this increases the desire to look into the UN books. And this growing evidence of multi-billion dollar level corruption leads to a real problem. Specifically it endangers that aura/illusion of legitimacy that keeps the faith of smaller nations strong. If this keeps getting bad it could wreck one of the few uses left to the thing for the big 3, and if they decide to its no longer useful and start really doin their own thing, then the world will get REALLY interesting.
This might be comin anyways, the Chinese are about 5 to 10 years from having 25,000,000+ surplus young men because of their 1 child limit. 25,000,000 extra young men with nothing to do but be p****d off about not having women is gonna be a _BIG_ problem for them, and possibly for the rest of us since that’s a lotta useless population and the Chinese have never been shy about invading neighboring countries in some of the more blatant landgrabs of the 20th century (VietNam and Tibet).

Chinas going to have a bigger percentage of gays than San Francisco...
Corruption could be handled if it was a smaller country in the UN, when the larger members of it though have evidence of massive corruption theres a problem. I suppose you're right though, the only way we would be able to essentially remake the UN would be to leave it, let it dissolve, have a massive world war, and then recreate it.

Interesting statistic from the coolest website in the world, the CIA World Fact book.
This is from China:
Military manpower - fit for military service:
males age 15-49: 208,143,352 (2004 est.)
Thats a whole lotta men to use in human wave assaults if they get uppity with someone.
On another interesting note...
India:
Military manpower - fit for military service:
males age 15-49: 172,153,371 (2004 est.)
And considering they both already dislike each other hand have fought numerous conflicts, if one of'em goes the distance it'll take a LONG time to sort out.

I'm pretty sure the UN's only remaining existence these days is merely to condemn Israel. That's about all they're good at it seems.

I dont think china can afford to mobilize thier army for a very long time. Just park a few divisions outside the china border, they'll go bankrupt just reinforcing the borders =p

At the moment that may be, however they aren't currently dealing with a social crisis from 25,000,000 spare young men. Spare young men with no chance of marrying have lots of spare time, and in that spare time have a tendancy to cause trouble. This is the government of Tienamin Square and human wave assaults. They'll have no compunction of handing a guy a AK a couple of clips and a pouch of rice and telling him to go assault that hill. Look at how the cash strapped NVA fought.
Should they chose to mix it up with the Indians at that point, then the indians are screwed. We could handle it because we make up quantity with high quality of arms and training. But the Indians arne't so fortunate to have our military industrial complex.

Yep, the advantages of having units that you truly do not care if they survive or not and honestly would prefer if they didn't.
