1: Grab pocket knife or similar object.
2: Pop off both windows hotkeys.
3: Enjoy hours of playtime with no irritating disconnects.
(Why would you need them in the first place? Makes the Alt key easier to get to, too.)

Ok, your first step on the road of not crashing the game by hitting the Windows Key/Alt-Tab/Ctrl-Esc ect. is downloading this:

Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit. (WACT. Just cause I wanted to make an acronym. Because acronyms make me sound cool.)
This sweet baby of a tool allows you to set certain options on and off in whatever executable program you like. Pretty slick. We'll be using it for PlayOnline today to stop the plague of crashes in Final Fantasy XI.
Step 1: Install, and run the Compatability Administrator Tool. Should look something like this:

Step 2: Click File->New. You should see a "New Database(1) [Untitled_1]" appear under Custom Databases:

Step 3: Right click on the New Database, highlight "Create New", then select "Application Fix":

Step 4: Name the program "PlayOnline", don't worry about the vendor. Go ahead and hit Browse, then find the file "Pol.exe". You should find it in your "\Playonline\SquareEnix\PlayonlineViewer\" directory. (Unless you installed it on some oddball place, in which case, track it down yourself you "outside the box thinker".) Proceed to click next when those fields are entered.

Step 5: Make sure "None" is selected for Compatability Modes, click next.

Step 6: Here's where it gets nice and juicy. Compatability Fixes. This is where all the options for running a program are switched on or off. The two main options we're looking for in this case are "DisableKeyboardCues" and "IgnoreAltTab":

Step 7: Click next, then click Finish under the "Matching Information" window. You should now have a window that looks like this:

Step 8: Right click on "New Database(1) [Untitled_1]*", and select install. It should now be listed underneath the "Installed Databases" selection.

Step 9: Close the program, save and name the database. I named mine POL and saved it in the Windows directory.

Windows key+R,
Windows key+L,
Windows key+D,
Windows Key+F,
Windows key+U,
Windows key+Pause,
Windows key then U then U/R.
btw, Thanks NinjaBurger, Any chance of the proper link? It got truncated with the ... thing to not be all there in the middle even when you click
