I'd say unless there was some form of interaction such as a webcam, chat etc then it would be grounds to get in trouble by a significant other. However, if you’re just whacking it to some randomgirl_019 online, in a magazine, or in your head then there is nothing there. No interaction, no relationship, no getting in trouble.

Cheating is violating the bond (of trust) that exists between you and your partner. Every relationship is different. Therefore not everyone considers the same things 'cheating'.

Read the 2nd half. If that is your chosen profession then you are doing it to support yourself, not purely for pleasure. And your mate will have accepted that decision.
Like the difference between dating a porn star, knowing full well that is how she earns her salary, and dating a w***e who sleeps around and cheats on you. Subtle, but definite distinction.
edit: I think the main thing is: if your partner knows what you are doing and accepts it, then it is not cheating. If you have to do it behind their back in secrecy it is most likely cheating.

I always had to wonder about something like this.. if you're really going to draw the line at "cheating is getting off without the consent of your partner" then how is online masturbation different from masturbating to the mental images of someone who is not your partner? Can you really hope to control who your partner fantasizes about? Would they feel left out or hurt if they knew you didn't always fantasize about them? Would it be fair to you for them to be hurt?
