I haven't tried Vanguard yet – can't seem to find the time these days – but I keep reading about how it has not only the fighting aspect of a classical RPG, but also the diplomacy and negotiations. That got me wondering … how important is the diplomatic aspect of the game? Is it just optional, like added on top of the main features, or is it integral, as in can't do without it?

Well I would have to say it's neither of the two extremes. It's much closer to the first one, though – it's definitely not "can't do without it", but I wouldn't say it's completely foreign to the rest. In some quests it's highly desirable, in some it's unnecessary … Most of the times it feels like a mini game.
