I must admit I don't really get it. If the basic service is free (participation on a basic account without any sort of fee), how is it possible then that the basic download is also free? Where do they make a profit if *everything* is free? Or is it that I'm just missing something?

Well yes, I'm not really an expert but I'd still say you're missing something huge: the system's authors and owners (Linden Labs, is it?) are in charge of the money transactions within the game. They're basically selling nothing for something, "virtual" dollars for real dollars. I'd say there's quite a large profit to be made there, don't you think?
