I've been thinking of giving Lord of the Rings Online a shot for quite some time now, but I don't know if it's worth my money and time (mostly time, mind you). I mean, I've been hearing both good things and bad things, and I don't know what to make of it. What do you guys say? Is LOTRO worth checking out for a casual player?

In a word, yes. In fact, in my opinion LOTR Online is one of the best MMO RPG choices for a casual player, because it's relatively easy to learn, and is not too hard to get into early on. Give it a shot.
