Would you call it a solo friendly game, generally speaking? I've never played before, and my friends keep talking about how great the PvP and GvG is in GW, but I'm more of a PvE guy myself, and I wouldn't really be that interested in a game that forces me to team up.

Solo-friendly? Yeah, pretty much. Lots of people solo through the basic campaigns, with heroes of course. See this thread for a list of suggested solo builds:
