My doctor prescribed some valium to me because neither ambien nor clonazepam was having much of an effect on me.

As I was looking over the labels, I saw 2 warnings that made me chuckle.

1) MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS - Alcohol may intensify this effect. Take care when operating heavy machinery or driving.

2) DO NOT EAT GRAPEFRUIT OR DRINK GRAPEFRUIT JUICE WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION.

I thought that was really weird... normally people swear off mixing booze and tranqs, and here they're saying it may only "intensify" the effect, which is almost an invitation to take a valium wth a margarita.

What really threw me for a loop was the huge, bolded warning against - grapefruits of all things. Anyone know what the deal is with valium and grapefruits?

The January 5th issue of the Medical Letter, a widely respected source of independent information about pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements, has a review of the increasingly researched problem of the interaction between grapefruit juice and many prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Like most interactions between chemicals in the body, this one involves the impairment, by grapefruit juice, of the body’s ability to metabolize many drugs, leading to higher than expected — and sometimes dangerous — levels of these drugs. This article lists the drugs

the grapefruit enzymes extend the halflife, making it last exceedingly longer. Don't potentiate valium, especially when you're sleeping already causing respitory depression.

I wasn't told anything about that. It's for plane flights is what I got it for. Meh.. I tried it and I just don't see what the big deal is. I don't feel a damn thing. I need something stronger.

I popped a pill yesterday, smoked some weed, and drank some... never again... never again. Still debating whether or not what I did was going to cause problems for me.

He is afraid of flying you tard. They prescribe him medication for it so he doesn't make a scene, and incase you weren't aware anxiety has physical symptoms once it rises to the level of a panic attack. Left untreated it can cause a myriad of psychological and physical problems, ulcers, depression, etc.

Yeah I have anxiety attacks when I get in an airplane. Part claustrophobia part good old-fashioned fear of flying. I don't see what the big deal is.. it's not like I'm shoving the pills down your throat.

I was being sarcastic. The whole point of this post was to point out that the warning against eating a f*****g grapefruit was more assertive and more obvious than the warning against mixing it with alcohol.....

you know what? Nevermind.... Devook doesn't understand and for some reason I find myself not caring one bit.

nah, they gave my mother in law a valium when she was going in for a cat scan...

the small space thing scared the shit out of her and she was on two, her blood pressure shot up and she had a fair good deal of anxiety despite them.

so imho they dont do shit to help. you should take something like a gravol about 15 mins before boarding then just sleep through the flight Very Happy

Some of these side effects are f*****g insane. My girlfriend's doctor put her on a medication to help combat an especially bad eczema flair up she was having, and only mentioned a few minor side effects (insomnia, etc). Later she finds out this is a medication they give to women to abort tubal pregnancies and the side effects included Liver Damage, Excessive Bleeding and Sudden Death.

The majority of doctors don't know shit these days. They take a guess and see attitude based partially on symptoms and mostly on which drug companies are the bigest financial contributors to grant programs at their hospitals. What's worse is even in the same HMO (Kaiser for example) doctors from different departments don't communicate so you have one doctor giving out a medication for aborting tubal pregnancies and an OBGYN tell you that if your excessive menstration continues they may have to do a historectomy.

The days when you can trust that your family doctor knows what they're doing and have your best interest in mind are long over...
