Between Apathy and Complacency
At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution in 1787, a Scottish history professor by the name of Professor Alexander Tyler had this to say about "The Fall of the Athenian Republic" over 2,000 years previous to that date:
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse (generous gifts) from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence. From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back into bondage."
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline, University School of Law, St.Paul, Minnesota, wrote this about the 2000 election:
Population of counties won by Gore 127 million, won by Bush 143 million.
Sq. miles of country won by Gore 580,000, won by Bush 2,427,000.
States won by Gore 19, by Bush 29.
Murder per 100,000 residents in counties won by Gore 13.2 by Bush 2.1 (not a typo).
Professor Olson adds, "The map of the territory Bush won was (mostly) the land owned by the people of this great country. Not the citizens living in cities owned by the government and living off the government.
Professor Olson thinks the US is now between apathy and complacency phase of democracy although he believes that 40 percent of the nation's population has already reached the dependency phase.
(Look carefully at the statistics again. Interesting, eh?)

I saw that quote in Forbes a few months back, great quote.
Very interesting article, but nothing new. It has long been said that the Democrats maintain power by creating an entitlement establishment. Legislating more and more dubious rights and entitlements. What would happen to all the social workers and activists if problems actually got better? Unemployment...
Thats my biggest gripe with Bush - he is acting like a liberal with all these Medicare drug benefits and giveaways. Who says it is your right and entitlement to be given expensive prescription drugs at age 75 and have my tax dollars pay for them? If you cannot afford to pay for your own healthcare, and you dont have family that can help, then just die gracefully, you are old and the money is better spent on other things.

I love the square footage statistic.
Rush Limbaugh said the same thing.
Then you realize that states like Wyoming with 550,000 people and voting for Bush contribute a huge amount of square footage compared to the 1,000,000 people voting for Gore in the relatively minute sq. footage of a big city.
Moron statistics for moron people, oh wellz.
Too bad the only one that really matters is how many Electoral Votes each candidate has.
I also note that they neglect to mention the total vote count on each side across the nation.

There is not one good thing your president has done for this country except get people laid off, take away social programs from the less fortunate, take away billions of dollars from education programs kids are being taught math by their phys ed teachers. I have this strong feeling that the point of the statistic was to show that those without land tend to be more dependant - land has always been a measure of self sufficiency to some degree. I don't see where the fuss is from, and a good article.

Square footage means nothing in the overall scheme of things. Rural populations have traditonally been conservative, Urban populations have been traditionally more liberal.
Less people live in rural areas, but account for much greater square footage and the wealthiest percentage own the largest amount of land - guess their vote should count for more? So much for democracy.
These statistics are designed to lead one toward erroneous conclusions.
Because he won in square footage, he won the votes of those not 'living off the government'. This requires an assumption that ruralites are less likely to receive government aid than urbanites - this is false. If you look at percentages of different populations, you'd see that more rural familes and communites receive some form of government aid. The overall totals may be greater in urban areas, but the overall population is greater as well.
It is also leading to the assumption that owning land means weath, and that also isn't always the case. A farmer may own hundreds of acres and be dirt poor and collecting food stamps, as well as farm subsadies. An urbanite may rent a flat but have an investment portfolio that could buy and sell the farm 10X over. And many urbanites do own their apartment, but 800 sq feet doesn't mean much compared to the size of Nebraska.
The crime statistic is probably the worst of the lot. North Dakota crime rates simply can't compare to LA or NY - those 100,000 people are so scattered across a vast area that they couldn't find each other to kill each other. Cities have always had a higher crime rate per capita.

People need to realize that so many of these points both sides make criss cross each other.
The whole big government vs. Small government issue to most people being ran by a large company and being ran by the government equal the same thing. Sure there are difference but we all know there is as much corruption in the corporate world as the government both high-end officials and top end employees are often over paid while others can barley feed their family.
Almost everyone get’s a form of welfare and the goal is to help out the person or company so they can become better or to get out of trouble. It’s just that it’s easier to point into a ghetto at some welfare queen with 6 kids then it is to point at a farmer who produces nothing but get’s just as much aid as farmers who do produce. Same with companies we give airlines money and the airlines still ask for pay cuts then raise their own salaries and bonuses.
It just looks nicer when a man in a 3k suit wastes are money then someone in a hip-hop outfit. And just like many companies take the money and improve themselves so do many people but we don’t here those stories, at least not about the people.
Same thing with crime for the love of god people still think your race will make you more likely to be a criminal then anything else. Wherever there is poverty and low education there will be crime. And the fact that we bunch poor with ghetto together doesn’t help. Out of a project of 1500 people maybe only 50 are true criminals now that’s still a lot but to someone on the outside all 1500 are lumped together under the title of ghetto.
As for owning land let’s face it you don’t need to go back to far to see many people not being able to own land or if they owned it they were forced out or bought out and this goes for everyone black white man women. So owning land is important and means something but many people had a head start on acquiring land long before everyone else did.
Why are cities packed with minorities? Is it because they like to be crowded in or they only want welfare or they want to live in the ghetto? No, it is because in the city you were less likely to be killed or beaten back in the day and again im not talking 400 years ago I’m talking 40 to 60 years go many not even that long.
Minorities and women had to come to the city to have a chance to make it and once you have a large number of your race there you figure you can go there to be safe and as time goes on that becomes your families “hometown” so as generations go by more people of your family will move out and onto other area’s but many will stay in that city.
Finally any assistance is a two way street and in the case of welfare it helps the rich and poor. The poor get a free ride for some and a step up for others. Some will achieve and move out of the ghetto but many others will not and keep generation after generation inside the ghetto.
This plays into many peoples favor they trade tax money for keeping “those people” out of their restaurants and their grocery stores and their neighborhoods. A small price to pay. The same can be applied to computers soon the digital divide will really mean something and those without the knowledge will be a step under those that have it.
In the end this is why we need both parties and any other third parties that come along to keep the balance. The real question is how good would we be if there were only one.
