I'm browsing newegg for a new CPU and im getting a 3.0 ghz northwood but i only 512 K cache... now the only 1 MB l2 cache are prescotts and I dont want a prescott because It runs hotter plus northwood is just a better core..

Can anyone explain why or if there is a 1 mb cache northwood?

Prescott needs a bigger cache because it has a longer pipeline. From what I recall, it still doesn't make up for it though; I think the Northwoods usually perform better. I could be wrong though, I'm just going by what I remember reading.

Stick with a 2.4GHz and put the 80% price difference in a savings account.

I have a 2.4 ghz Razz

I want the 800 fsb and Hyper Threading... which will decrease the bottlenecking on my 6800 GT...

Plus newegg has a sale on the 3.0 ghz today.

if your using it for gaming just buy a new board and get a A64...

if not then the northwood is a very very solid chip, the cache isnt a huge deal.. but i would do what someone said and keep the 2.4ghz and just buy a badass hs and fans and oc it up a bunch. Hyper threading on intels isnt that great, not really gonna see huge preformance increases with it... personally i prefer northwood over prescott but the arguement can be made for either one.. neither is great, neither really sucks, neither is as good as the amd counter parts =/

And brash not as far as i know, they still dont have a good chip to be the flagship of the p5 line.

like where would you notice it ?

f**k the differance between my p3 700 and my p4 2.4 wasnt like night and day or anything . was better but ..........

depends on what type of games you play, what type of programs you run, what type of other hardware you have.. for him it would prolly be worth it since his vid card is good but i dont think a huge preformance increase would occur, maybe 10-20 percent.

The FSB is higher which is what makes a big difference in performance with RAM and video card... the 2 things I push hard on my system.... so I think im gonna order it now.

$218 is a good buy i think for a northwood 3.0 ghz p4 HT.

Thing is that CPU is a huge bottleneck for a high end video card like a 6800 GT. It actually slows the card down and it doesn't run to its full potential. Granted that 2.4ghz CPU would run near flawless with a card like a 9800Pro but it isn't so with a 6800 or a x800. He would see a huge increase in speed just by upgrading his cpu, that extra 600mhz combined with the higher FSB and Hyperthreading would be like putting in an express lane for transfering data. Granted the increase wouldn't be something super but it could be anywhere from a 15-30fps increase in modern games all the way to him having the ability to play games at higher resolutions with AA/AF turned on.

CPU bottlenecking is a huge killer of the current new generation of video cards. You really gotta have a 3ghz+(or AMD equivilant) processor, for it to really be worth the money.

ya its a quality chip, northwood imo is the best architecture intel has out at a reasonable price point atm... great thing about is if you do have good ram you can really overclock it to hell and back.

What about antec for tower fans?
I only have 3 fans in my tower case.. one on the side and 2 in the back.
I have 4 more slots for fans in the front... want to add atleast 2 more to the front side.
Plus my computer is in my room next to the air vent so it stays nice and chill

Also.... i need a new power supply.. mine is making that rawr rawr noise like something is going either one of the fans in the ps or something else... but I want to go with antec, they've always had a good power supply... saw one at comp usa 480W for 119.99....

P5's are out, gone and obsolete, same with P6...

Intel needs a new naming strategy...

For those that don't know the original Pentium's were called P5's and Pentium Pro's P6's... Then the "Pentium II" came out and it f****d it all up...

antec true power are great psus... as far as their fans go i dont really know, i imagine they are ok, but remember to check out how much air they push.. i think antec makes some nice quiet fans which are good if you have room for um in the case, just remember if you replace the cpu stock fan you prolly wanna go with something that pushes alot of air rather than a quiet one since theres only one fan working for the cpu.. i am assuming you use 80mm fans too, if you have 120mm ones then the number you have is prolly good enough especially in a cool environment.

I think intel realized that people who buy their processors are generally kind of dumb and wouldnt know that IV was equal to 4... wouldnt have been a problem if they stayed with the roman numeral naming convention.
