|
|
|
I think I am going to install Fedora Core 4 ..
Obviously a very easy Linux install, but I have one question about it:
This is my computer setup:
Master Hard Drive: 1 partition - NTFS
Slave Hard Drive: 3 partitions - one is a linux boot partition, the other is a 50 gig linux partition - and then a 200 gig fat32 partition
I am installing linux on the 50 gig linux partition on the slave hard drive.
I am pretty sure that within my computer's bios I can set which hard drive to boot from.
So here's the question:
Ultimately I would like to set up my computer to do exactly this:
1- In my bios, set it to boot from the slave hard drive (my bios supports it)
2- have GRUB on the slave hard drive set up to boot either linux (on the slave hard drive) or windows (on the main hard drive)
3- have the option to go back into my bios and set it to boot from the main hard drive again thus totally ignoring the GRUB bootloader and running windows normally (and obviously, the ability to go back into bios and set it to boot from my slave hard drive again thus loading GRUB and being able to boot either linux or windows from there)
This should therefore allow me to do all my crazy linux boot shit on one hard drive, and have just the standard windows shit on the other (the NTFS hard drive and boot sector should therefore not get f****d with)
What I'd like to know:
Will this work / can I do this?
Also .. any other tips from you linux gurus
Thank's in advance! Especially to frashii just because

There's a FAQ doc on the Fedora website that will take you step-by-step in how to dual boot a Linux / Windows system.

oh?
i looked at the walkthrough for installation and it's section on the GRUB bootloader .. it didn't have my specific case .. or anything that really resembled it
i didn't realize there was an FAQ as well
i'll check it out

i cant seem to find the FAQ you're talking about on http://fedora.redhat.com/
the only FAQs I find are a SELinux FAQ for core3/2 and a general "What is Fedora" FAQ

P.S. I'm a Linux newb too, but I know how to Google shit. |
that doesn't exactly tell me what I want ..
that is primarily a guide on how to set up your partitions .. not your bootup (and doesn't say anything about GRUB)
I already have my partitions setup .. I simply want to know if I can make it so that grub is placed only on my slave hard drive and boots both linux (on this hard drive) and windows (on the other, master hard drive) from there without interfering with the master hard drive boot record

This is not a standard newbie dual boot setup he's trying to make. Looks like you should be looking in the GRUB documentation. I don't think it lets you boot from another physical disk but I'm not sure.

i believe that my bios allows me to select my HD primary boot device ..
i'm pretty sure about that too because I remember being able to go into my bios and even tell it to boot from my external USB hard drive
