Setting: Sci-Fi MMORPG
Game Task: Breach an enemy datacenter's internet security

Problem: How would you visualize this?

I'm thinkin a mix between tetris, pacman and a porno.

I don't think Vekril was talking about making user interfaces to games. Maybe he was talking about making love. Who cares?

Anyway, how do you visualize "hacking" a system? This is up to the player of course but I guess what I'm asking is how do you visualize it?

To me it would be like traversing a maze, trying different keys in different doors and covering your tracks as you go so sniffers can't find you.

The maze is of course your host (since you don't know what all it has), each door is a service they're running, and the keys you have will open the door (exploit a vulnerability) if the door has a certain lock (version number).

The sniffers are dogs / pacman ghosts / vampire clouds / whatever which pick up your scent, follow you, and throw you out if they find you.

Obviously the more of a newb you are, the smellier you are. So maybe you start off leaving long, glowing footprints. Very Happy

Wait, what kind of interface do you mean?

Do you mean in a TV setting, a fake GUI that a character is going to be using? Or is it perhaps a fake GUI for a video-game that the user is going to be. Similar to the "hacking" GUI of KOTOR or Deus Ex?

It's pretty obvious that you totally didn't read the first post at all.

Wow. Another 100% laugh out loud post by Tiluvas.

This reminds me of the GE commercial for some new medical device where it starts out an old show of some exploration mission and when the guy says "We gotta get back to the ship", it then shows a operating room with the surgeon going doot, doot, doot. His assistants then tell him he said that they need to get back to the ship and he has no idea he said anything like that.
Whenever I work with computers I never see anything like that, I just do what I need to do and be done with it.

remember that one car commercial from honda or someone where they have the whole car disassembled in parts and just like that one artist does, each part hits a different part and it keeps going and going.

god that's a great commercial

I visualize it like that scene in Johnny Mnemonic when he's scanning the library with those VR gloves.

I do not think hacking would translate to a gaming interface. The hacking itself is the game for anyone interested in hacking, and I really doubt anyone who is not a hacker (like myself) would care much about a game like that.

In English, it would have virtually no market.

better answer Dunn:

I am not a hacker nor a programmer, so I have no idea what hacking actually entails aside from a lot of typing. So it is impossible for me to visualize it, unless you mean in the broadest sense of breaking into something.

Like I said, if you aren't at least moderately fluent in computers and programming, you cannot even visualize this.

lol, no worries.

Occulis is often funny and innocuous, SM the same. It is just Tiluvas who is annoying. He has 2 posts that he repeats over and over, and maybe they were funny the first few times, but now it is just pathetic.

You should have started a new thread to address this, as it doesn't quite belong in this one. If you would like, I can start it for you.

There was a Commodore 64 game, called 'Hacker' or something of that nature.

Basically, when the game loaded up, all you got was that famous ***COMMODORE 64*** blue screen and the command cursor. You had to figure out what to do and where to go from there.

So really, I don't visualize alot of bells and whistles when I think of a hacker GUI. However, Tron would be nice.

I'm going for glamour, style and a futuristic visual simulation of breaking and entering.

It'll probably have these elements:

Goal:
Open a door, any door, with any of the keys (or abilities) at your disposal.

Find target:
Running down hallways to your target door. The better you are at cracking systems, the straighter the path. The more of a newb you are, the more maze-like the path becomes.

Get Prize:
3-D, gently rotating, half-translucent tetris shapes, religious symbols and maybe even guild logos.

Run from (or fight) Bad Guy:
Lots of room to play on this one.

Cover your tracks:
Passive ability. Shortens the time your footprints stay on the ground. If you're a noob, you can move slower so you don't leave such a long trail.

That's about it. Pretty simple, yah? It's going to be a subcomponent of a game - not the whole game itself.

eh.. keep it a maze based on the system difficulty in ratio to the hacking skill, rather than just the higher you are the easier it gets..

it's pretty difficult regardless to crack through the pentagon... wait bad example, scott air force base's security

** Why the pentagon's a bad example... when you throw politicians in the chance for user stupidity increases 10 fold =p

Do it the old-fashioned way: Break into the building, knockout a couple old security guards and use their cards to get into the system.

a bunch of beeping windows that keep popping up with unreadably small text

ram 140 wpm on the keyboard and they close .. upon closing a victory beep sounds .. eventually the screen lights up with "Access Granted" and the hacking is complete
