But it turns out the bastards are doing it on purpose:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=494&ncid=763&e=4&u=/ap/20041202/ap_en_tv/tv_time_shifting
| Quote: | TV Networks Shift Times, Run Longer Shows
Wed Dec 1,10:12 PM ET
Add to My Yahoo! Television - AP
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Television networks are lending new meaning to time-shifting: TV shows don't necessarily start or end right on the hour or half-hour anymore, screwing up some viewers' video recordings.
More programs are running an extra minute or two longer to keep viewers from switching channels. Shows recently padded include CBS's "Without a Trace," Fox's "Renovate My Family," ABC's "The Bachelor" and NBC's "ER," according to Nielsen Media Research.
The tactic has been used on and off for a few years but has grown more popular as competition in network television stiffens.
As a result of the overruns, people who use VCRs and digital video recorders like TiVos end up clipping the beginning or ending of a show. For some, the time conflict could also prevent a later show from being recorded.
TiVo (news - web sites) Inc. officials say they have fielded a small number of complaints about the network time-shifting. This season, the company began advising its 2 million subscribers to watch out for such time conflicts and to adjust their recording settings manually.

I've noticed it.
I've stopped watching those channels as much as possible and download the shows off bit torrents and such.. and I told them so.
Time shifting to f**k with TiVO/VCR owners is akin to buying a song off Itunes and then being told 'no you can't burn it to cd!'
f**k DRM.
I know its the law... I know its 'their' content.... I don't care

"Lost" also does this...it ends at 8:01 central...but, I think that BBC America does it as well..I know that when my timer is keyed to my cable box and I tape a show to start on the hour, I am missing the first two minutes, I think, of the programs..most annoying when watching a mystery

I thought it was me to sin. I'd see really weird start/end times when I'd look at the preview info on the cable guide or whatever. I don't watch too much tv though other then the discovery channel so its all cool I guess... s****y of the networks to f**k with people's recordings though.

I see it all the time on many channels. Comcast will show a 6-7 show running 6-7:05 or :15 or sometimes just a minute over.

omg NO. I hate that show.
The script is witty but the delivery is just pure shit. It's too fake and way too studied. Sometimes I feel they're choking on the sentences.
I guess it had to happen sometime, but you finally posted something I cannot condone!
One time in 2 years isn't a bad record though, is it?

Well, don't take it too hard. You only being wrong once in two years is a pretty good record
I can't help it though; I'm a sucker for funny dialog. Sometimes I rewind it and listen to the same sentences over and over till I'm done laughing at them. Or until my wife tells me to cut it the hell out.

I stretched the tape on my Star Wars episode 1 VHS from rewinding it so many times at the spot where the droid thing kicks Jar Jar in the penis.

That show is complete shit. The only reason worth watching it is for the milf My friend's girlfriend and her roommate watch that show religiously. I shudder at the fact that the main girl looks like she's 12 and won't look like she's legal until she's 40 or older.

Being technically challenged, I have not a clue how to: rip apart a DVD, download a bt file and somehow watch it or burn it to disk, etc
So, I settle for TV and VCR taping right now.
Lost is great...I am so happy to watch something on regular tv for a change. I also am watching House but I haven't decided if I like it or not. Dr. House's persona comes off as WAY too contrived, a little too often for me. Not to mention that he crosses way too many lines in his profession--I wouldn't want him diagnosing me with his bloodstream full of Vicodin
On BBCAmerica, tho, I am blissfully happy watching the mysteries on Monday nights and the mysteries on Biography channel on Saturdays and Sundays

I am such a dork...
I hacked my TiVO to sync its timesource from my network -5 minutes and not from the Tivo company.
Now, I miss the first 2-3 minutes of 95% of the shows... but I get the ending of all of them.
