As far as I know, the SR-71 is still retired. I believe it was too expensive to maintain and use, and not really needed without the threat of another superpower. I could be wrong though.
Paden you are smoking crack, the A-10 is also badass looking.

He is 100% correct as per the pilots who flew it.
They named it warthog because they thought it was ugly.

the "A" designation is for "attack"
F/A-18 Hornet... Fighter/Attack aircraft
the F designation is given for primary dogfighting abilities, the A is given for ground attack capabilities

The A-10 is pretty sweet. We have them where I am stationed. Very graceful and very quiet. Depleated uranium tip shells for piercing the armor of tanks and shit. And able to fly with half the damn plane missing.
I wish that I was able to get my incentive ride in one of em.. but alas. Tis only a 1 seater. Guess it will just have to be a F16

Faer is correct, A is for attack.
We had a squadron of them near Knox and they used to use the the ranges. We'd be out humping to a range and then we'd hear them coming. It's a very distinctive sound, and yes, realtively quiet for what they are. It was badass too..they were coming, you could tell..then they just pop up over the ridge and trees and you'd hear brrrrrrrrp, brrrrrrrrp, and then down range you'd see the impacts hitting the old tanks on the range. It would ight them up. During the nice show, the A-10s would then jump back down on the deck and zip around...
Talk about an instant woody. At one time I wanted to fly them. Then I learned they were phasing them out(all prior to the gulf war) so I didn't pursue that line..it p****d me off to learn they had a resurgence of usage for the gulf war and then some for the second gulf war. Oh well. /sigh

Of course the idiots in Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon have cancelled production of the A-10 and are replacing it in favor of the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Retarded. A-10's aren't designed to attack as anything except close-support, and F-15's aren't designed for that, even if they can put a ton of ordinance on it the A-10 still can fly in there and take a missile hit and still get out whereas the F-15 can be f****d by even small arms fire.
Anyways, the A-designation comes from stuff like the A-1 Skyraider, A-7 Corsair, etc., these were all designed for ground attack missions. The Navy eventually made the F/A-18 and merged them ;p

A-10 is one of my all-time favorite airplanes because it was built to be very simple and rugged. I'm going to Tucson, tonight, home of one of the two A-10 training bases, so I'll be able to see a lot of them.

Yea...the A-10 can literally fly with half of it missing. Back in Desert Storm, one took a shell to the wing, half the wing ripped apart, and went straight into the engine. Engine stalled, pilot got it restarted, and landed. Half a wing missing, engine f****d to hell....and it still flew. Pretty f*****g impressive aircraft.
I miss the F-111 though.

Tucson blows though. =\

I lived there for about 10 years a couple miles from the graveyard and my dad used to work there so I know about it...and I also know that Tucson blows. :( I was hoping to go skiing in Mt Lemmon, but it looks like there will be no snow.
