That's the only thing I don't like about required service. I would hate to have someone fighting beside me who wants out as much as I want in.

I want it required to be a citizen but I don't want people serving who don't want to bo there. So until liberalism dies it's better that it stays voluntary.
When I say I want it I'm talking in the 'liberal manner' of idealisms.

Required military service is for countries who do not have the morale for volunteers. America does not suffer from this problem. Most of the people living here who have had the opportunity to see the rest of this planet realize how good they have it - and that it's worth fighting for.

You realize most people join the army for the benefits, right? Free education they couldn't afford otherwise.
Of course there are exceptions - people joining because of tradition, because they're looking for advancement and comradship, or because they just wouldn't fit in corporate america.
And yes, there's the very small minority who gives up everything because they think it's the right thing to do. (that baseball player who was killed comes to mind) If only those would serve though, there wouldn't be an army big enough to defend Riker's island - much less the entire US.

Umm, Germany, Israel, The Former Soviet Union. All have/had required service and are some pretty powerful countries militarily.

I may not live there, but i have quite a few friends who are either in army/navy or have been . and at least 80% just joined for the benefits

Yeah don't you love reading about some 18 year old scared shitless in Israel shooting up a family's car with the family in it. The Soviet Union lol lets not even talk about the troops selling their tanks for food because they don't get paid or fed or shooting their fleeing troops in the back. They should make military service mandatory for males. At least 2 years. The military is an excellent place to work the punk attitude out of all the snotty, know nothing teenagers. The country would be much better off by doing this, no doubt.
