There were no levels. I could play for a week and team up with someone who had been playing nonstop for a month, and there would be no penalty for doing so. Awesome.

It still had leveling, but basically you selected a primary and secondary skill set (plus some tertiary power pools which had lesser effects, like super speed, flying, stealth, etc) and as you leveled you could add slots to your different abilities which you could add attachments to, like make it more accurate, make it do more dmg, make it mez longer, make it take less energy, etc. so basically you could make the skills you use the most really powerful and ignore the skill you don't like, or try to balance them all out, etc.
You basically had a lot of customization as far as your abilities. (Like my guy had this sniper laser beam attack that I maxed the slots out on, It could kill an enemy 1 level higher than me in a single hit. (but the difference between CoH and other games is you dont really fight single enemies, they are usually in groups between 2-20 guys)

That sounds neat. Why did CoH fail to retain long-term (more than 2 month) interest?

It's one of those games where like the first 2 weeks you play it its like a constant orgasm, but then it just turns into a serious grind, and without the "loot" element its a f*****g hard grind.

I played it for about 3 weeks, yeah. I was trying to get into harvesting, but finally was just like, "Oh, f**k it. Everyone has the same armor in the end anyway."

yeah the armor and loot issue is one of the reasons I can't stand SWG, but in this upcoming HUGE patch that i've been hearing about forever, they are supposed to be introducing tons of new armor

Uhm, I was refering to the point that in CoH you could set someone as your sidekick and they were like 2-3 levels lower than you as long as you were grouped. That way you can be level 60 and bring new real life friends to see what your doing or exp with them.

and now you can reverse side kick which means you (the level 60) can drop down to their level and fight low level stuff with them without them incurring any xp penalty.
(they did this before eq2 so shut the f**k up you piece of shit fanatics)
