There's this mission (or quest, whatever) that I don’t know how to finish, and it bugs me to no end. It's the one where I have to protect Prince Rurik, but when he uses the horn and charges down the hill into all those charr, I can't keep track of him and he dies! I've always hated those NPC-cover missions in all games … any way to avoid this?

Well yeah, it can get tough at times, especially if you're low level – I guess the key might be to deal with each group quickly before the next one comes up. For instance, at the very beginning there's this group of charr to the right – if you charge them and dispatch as many of them as you can quickly, you'll have time to intercept the second one, and the first ones won't be following you down the hill as you progress.
BTW, missions and quests aren't the same thing.
