Why do they bother with version numbers? 5.1? Who gives a f**k? It's either 3D sound or not. What more can you add in 5.2, or I guess in some peoples cases "5.2.1 phase 3 beta?"
What more can you do, besides give it a glossier logo?
"No, really. It's 3D sound this time. We mean it. Last time it was just, uh.. 2D but you were hallucinating."

Well the .1 is for the subwolfer because it is self powered. So you have 5 speakers that run off your amp, and the .1 the sub that is self powered.

bingo
and then ya get into 6.1 and 7.1 and I've even seen set up's of 10.1 which seems pretty stupid for most home applications.

So 6.1 means 6 speakers and 7.1 means 7?

Yes, Occulis, you are correct.
Dolby Digital 2.0 is two discrete channels, no Low Frequency Effects (LFE channel, which is what a subwoofer would produce). They don't talk or hype this one very much.
Dolby Digital 5.1 is five discrete channels, with an additional LFE channel. This is the one everyone pretty much knows and hears about.
Dolby Digital EX is where additional channels come in, with the 6.1 and 7.1 varieties. These add more surround speakers. Nothing that I know of is actually being mastered or produced with that many discrete channels, so your surround sound processor (generally included in your audio/video receiver these days) uses algorithms to analyze the surround information and separate it out to the extra surround speakers.

7.1 is one in front center , left right front . left right side, left right behind and a out for a sub .
think 6.1 has a center speeker int he back .
there is dolby digital pro logic 2.0 though . i think you may have been getting at this .
DD 1.0 takes tracks that are recorded at 5 channels like a DVD and sends the sound to the right speekers.
DD 2.0 can take a track that is recorded in 2 chanels like a music cd and artificially change it into a 5 channel sound.
DD 2.0 is well worth the money. like night and day when you listen to it.

Some people aren't in to audio... but it's like half of a movie to me. I have a 5.1 system just because my tv room is fairly small.

I have 7.1 and I'm sitting on a speaker right now, playing very low bass on the balls. It's like a vibrator for girls..but not. If that makes sense.
Bass on the bawls feels gud.

For home applications and most studio applications, having any more than 5.1 is barely useful. A well-built 5.1 system using DTS encoding can replicate pretty much the exact same rear soundwall that 7.1 would offer. I use Klipsch 5.1 THX for surround, and Event 20/20 monitors for stereo monitoring. By the way, if you are ever looking to get into studio/audio work, you cannot beat those monitors. They're relatively inexpensive for monitors, ~$799, and the sound quality will kick your shit up a notch.
