Umm.. ok I'm not following.

Can someone explain to me the significance of this because I'm not following it.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030305/tv_nm/media_cbs_dc_3

So what if he used a fake accent. What was CBS promising? 100% accuracy of the CONTENT or the DELIVERY of the statement? Is it just me or is this an absolutely stupid thing to cover in the news?

-Nah-

I guess it just detracts from the supposed seriousness of the piece. Makes it seem sort of like Hogan's Heroes or something.

Yeah, it's just CBS playing off the stereotype concerning how an arab is supposed to speak english. Could you imagine if the real translator spoke nearly flawless english??? That would be horrible, some of us may actually respect some of them more. It would almost be like they're educated!

Very lame of CBS to do this, even if the content was unaltered. They're not helping anyone's cause, just adding to the absurdity.

I think our President needs to stop harassing CBS. I have a serious problem with him as a person and his policies.

Notice the ones who are most politically informed always seem to come to realpoor to talk about it, featuring signatures with jesus, a couple snakes, and a marijuana leaf, and play EverQuest from their nazi parents household :0

Yes, I am the One and the All.

Well, not really.. it was just a cool looking picture. I mean its really cool looking really. Pretty neat stuff there. I do try to stay reasonably well informed, although, I guess I shouldn't say reasonably, when 90% of it comes from realpoor.

Anyhoo, there is a certain..respect that must be given to other people and I feel that Bush, Jr. hasn't done that. Telling CBS that they were "disappointed" in them? Who f*****g cares? They are CBS, a TV station, they can do whatever they g*****n well please, just like it says in the Bill of Rights. Whether it was a good idea or not is not the case, it is the principle of the President singling out the media on a piece he didn't like.

To a lesser extent, his blatant invocation of his religious faith in his political agenda, and his constant rhetoric that makes him sound like the second great flood.

strange you mention the bill of rights when the president saying what he wants is part of that.. he is a servant of the system not the system itself.

what CBS did was bullcrap.. they release a propaganda video and the white house asks if they can send someone to talk about it once its shown.. never did they say dont show it at all just they want someone on who can talk about it.. CBS says no and thats what they are disappointed in.. now we find out even the accent is propaganda.

CBS showing enemy propaganda and claiming its true is disappointing... it would be like someone in WW2 on a major network (radio?) saying that the jews did in fact need to be killed.

Just because someone has the right to say something doesn't mean you can't critisize them for it. You have the right to say something stupid. I have the right to say "shut up you retard". I am not infringing on your right to free speech by doing that.

You have to be joking...You actually judge people's mental capacity on their hereditary accent?

The reason its disappointing is CBS did it to lend credibility to their interview with Hussein and to play on American Stereotypes as has been pointed out. It would have lacked the subconcious impact that it had if he'd have been speaking in flawless english. Fewer would have taken it seriously. So it was a psychological ploy, and playing on peoples emotions & prejudices by the Media is pretty highly frowned up on.

P.s. If you took that interview seriously, Please send $5,000 and your car, its title and its registration to this address...

Nope, didn't say that. I'm implying that we would've been more comfortable and respectful towards someone working with/for Hussein if he spoke like us. Don't read this as a blanket statement covering everybody with accents Wink

CBS wanted to be sure he had a voice like those middle eastern terrorists you see in the movies, so they hired an actor to play the part.

I guess so...I'd like to see it though, to better judge if it was fake or real accent...Arabs don't always necessarily look "arab"..and they don't always necessarily talk "arab" either...

Also...My dad is arab, when he speaks english he sounds just about as american as any white trash hill billy in So Cal, and when he speaks arabic, he sounds arab...so I dunno wtf you guys are talking about.

No, this guy wasn't a translater at all, nor was he Arab. He was a member of the screen actors guild, who specializes in doing foreign accents, and he simply read the piece which had been translated by others.

I never said anything about him being a translator...I just said, some arabs don't necessarily fall under the arab stereotype when it comes to looks and accent...

But I just read the article for myself (was too lazy to in the first place) and it said he was an actor, so I guess he was...

*shrugs* weird...

I agree with that completely, and that's the very reason why CBS used an actor. They wanted to find that stereotype and feed into it. It made the story seem bigger and more dangerous with the downside of looking like asses if they got busted.

Yea see...I thought you were just "saying" he had a fake accent because you know how arabs are supposed to sound.

I didn't think they actually used an actor, it just sounded ridiculous..and it is!
