Personally, I don't think they're all that great. Over hyped, a sure win with the Bnet Kiddies. Their DPS isn't all that great. Nothing exceptional and many other classes that fit in this role can do it better. Doesn't offer much in a group environment. Why would I ever take a Hunter over a Rogue, DPS War, or a Mage? Heck, I would take a Warlock over a Hunter any day. Their defense is pretty bad, until they get Mail. Soloing as a melee leather based is pretty rough now, especially with the AC changes they made a few patches back. Pet damage is nothing exceptional either, they act as a Tank, Add tank more than anything. Bow/Gun progression is pretty bad as well. You get a Range wep upgrade maybe once every 6-8 levels, and that's only because there's a huge influx of Green/Blue items in beta. In release, I see this being a huge problem. Either way, I don't think the class is finished, nor will they even come close after Talents. It's one of those classes if you truly enjoy, and want to stick with it, is a good choice. Otherwise, I really would consider playing a more useful and wanted class.

Hunter NPCs are scary. Each shot taking 15% of your health or more is no fun, especially when their pet is taking 3-5% per strike. Dunno how PC hunters are.

That's because they increased NPC Range damage 3-4 patches back. I think in terms of PvP, a Lvl 60 Hunter does about 100-120 dmg a shot to me @ Lvl 53. That's not much when I have 4k HP =/

My hunter is level 40 if that counts, ask some specific questions I'll mess around with talents when the servers come up and get back to this post.

rogue does more dps i'm pretty sure, but hunter has a pet to tank for it, and pet heal, overall it can solo better in my experience, but i've only played to like...level 15, loltrakanon@you.

They are way fun.
I only have a 28 hunter currently, but all I can say, is if you get the right pets at the right levels, not only will your pet own, but if you can keep your equiptment, gun specificly, up to date you are set. From mid teens to my current level, I could solo npc's 2-4 levels higher than me. Duoed with someone who can heal, my pet can tank, and between the 2 of us, and the healer, we can take on 5-8 mobs at the same time, rangeing from our level to 3 levels higher without a problem.
I wont be playing one as my main, or even my first alt, but I will be playing one at some point or another.
Ohh and once they add more abilities for pets, they should be alot more fun, being able to mix and match abilities for pets.
Another problem they should fix is pet storage. Once you are 60, there is no reason to only have 3 pets which are all capped in everything.

I went full range talents and I can solo level 47 mobs at level 42. Not with complete ease, but you get the picture. If you do play a hunter, I could recommend full pet talents until level 50 (with the exception of the hunter's mark upgrade maybe). I just killed a level 43 elite using my rapid fire skill at level 43. 950 exp on 1 kill isn't too shabby (I was rested) Rapid fire downtime is what? 5 minutes?
PvP. I was doing awesome in PvP surprisingly before talents were even implemented. At level 35, I killed a 43 mage without much of a challenge. Although she chased me a ways and I cheetah'd then turned around with aspect of the hawk up (I had hunter's mark on her from when she first tried to nuke me) and turned around, threw on a viper sting (mana drain), used rapid fire and beat the living crap out of her. With talents, needless to say, hunters are dps gods. I duo'd a ?? warrior at 42 with a 40 druid who was with me and I've taken out quite a few others who were my level or 2-3 higher.
Pets are great for interrupting spellcasters in PvP and distracting them from their main target; you. Once someone turns to take out your pet (it happens occasionally), you can just unload on them like no tomorrow, usually by the time they react they are dead. I found myself even killing paladins pre talents.
As for groups, traps aren't very practical, but freeze trap is semi helpful if you plan on pulling more than 1 mob and you don't have a shaman to snare a runner (given the mob dies relatively quickly). I usually just use concussion shot when the mob is getting low or run in and attempt a wing clip. Last but not least...

it's a talent calculator. This way, you don't have to keep resetting your talents and spending obscene amounts of cash. I used one of these for my druid, the site might have a list of other class talent calculators as well.
The cost of constantly feeding your pet gets a bit annoying since you have to keep buying ammo (unless you're an engineer, then you can make bullets for pretty cheap). If you have patience and tend to have extra backpack space I'd say take up cooking so you can make meat and fish on the run from the mobs you're killing. Cats and bears arguably make the best pets. Mobs like turtles and bats require fruit/fungus, which is not only non cookable, but also rare to find on merchants besides the undead areas. The high end zone towns do not carry these types of food.
Cats are considered dual wielders, so they honestly do the most dps considering they can learn claw AND bite. Bears tend to have a bit more HP/AC and they can learn claw/bite as well, but not cower (not that your pet really needs this skill. Cower is an agro reducer.
For hunters I'd recommend either skinning/mining or mining/engineering as your two professions. I think that about covers my feelings on the class, I'll most likely be playing an orc hunter in retail unless my guild goes alliance in which case I will try dwarf pally

currently theres no real reason to not go engineering, it is by far the best of the tradeskills in terms of actual utility and adding stuff to your class that it didnt have before.
hunters that i have seen so far are pretty pwn... i wouldnt be to incredibly surprised to see um nerfed because it seems to be blizzards thing lately to make a class gods then nerf them into the ground (hi mages) but i hope not.

My Hunter is 44. With talents now there DPS is more inline to what it should be. I like it, its a great solo class with the pet and still should be in the top 3 dps classes when all is said and done.
At level 40 you also get mail which makes a huge difference and will pump your ac way up. The cheetah aspect got a speed bump to 30% last patch but it still dazes you if you get hit which sucks.
I like the class a lot and will play one still in retail, i lost the interest to really level it up over the last month or so with retail coming soon.
At lvl 44 with a epic bow i have no problems with DPS though =).
