Is there, like, some guide or tutorial, or something like that? I never played before, and I'm hearing people say you can actually turn a profit playing this thing the right way, unlike most games that charge you for playing and offer no chance to earn back the money in return.

Sure there is, though for most of them you have to pay, either L$ or R$. Like, for example this one is just 20 bucks: http://www.killerguides.com/guides/sl/guide/second-life/linden-dollars
But you can get free guides as well, and they're usually not written much worse than the purchasable ones. For example, here's a good one which is also free: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=121897
