I could have sworn you could do this through group policy but I can't seem to find the setting now.

There are two other ways. You could create a blank icon for what you want to hide...or you could hide all icons on your desktop at once. Do either of those help? Why do you want to hide it anyway?

I'm gonna have to parrot everyone.

Why would you want to hide them, especially my computer, much faster than navigating to windows explorer.

I have to empty my recycle bin every so often. It not being there would be a pain.

Wow, you all really suck. Here's how you do it.

Step 1.) Right click on your desktop and goto "Properties"

Step 2.) Click on the "Desktop" tab

Step 3.) Goto "Customize Desktop" at the bottom.

Step 4.) Now just check off the little icons you don't want to appear.

Step 5.) Win at life.

What could be faster than windows key+e or right click start button and press x, or click explore?

Use black electrical tape. Or white-out would work.

I am using XP, I seriously have no idea how I did it. Maybe a friend used that program when he reformatted it for me or something.

I should have specified Windows 2000 Server. It doesn't have the desktop option. I want to remove it because I'm setting up a demo for a convention in las vegas. I can't find powertoys that works on 2000 server, either. I actually managed to hide them by assigning them a blank icon and renaming them with a "space".

That's the only way I know of that works for sure. I'm pretty sure you can hide them by setting up a policy to do it too though. I had to hide all the icons for one of my users at my old job. Everything was hidden except Recycle Bin, Excel, Word, and Lacerte shortcuts. I'm 99% certain I did it through group policy but I can't remember exactly how. That was on a 2000 network too. Sad
