Before I started playing EVE seemed like such a nice game to me. But now, after just about a week I am thinking about quitting it for good. The thing is that Im totally unable to compete with the others and I dont know how will I ever be. It takes such a long time to have a skill trained and it seems that everyone in the game has been here for years except for me. What can I do to speed my development up?

There are some tricks that may help you but the most important thing is that you need to be patient. If you just want to compete with the others trough PvP and nothhing more than perhaps Eve is not the right game for you. There are tons of MMORPGs now that are all about competing with others and buying high level chars and such so you might try one of them instead.

You have to realize that your character's skills do mean all that much in this game compared to other games. You actually will need several months to learn some basic strategies, start remembering what all modules and ships do, make new friend in game, etc. The key here is to be patient.
Why do I say that your skill doesn't mean much in EVE? Because as a veteran player I have read soooo many stories about players buying high level characters and buying ISK then making complete fools of themselves and all EVE community laughing at them. So if you were to get a 30 million skill point character right now to be competitive as you want to be, would you know how to play it right? Nope. You need to spend several months as a newbie with your newbie character, when all mistakes are forgiven to you, and learn the game first. And yes it takes about half a year. EVE is a long term MMO game that fortunately does not require you to be a hardcore gamer to get somewhere.
In all MMO games you start at lowest level. You're saying right now that because you started at level 1 and cannot compete with level 70 characters you're going to quit the game. Does this sound a bit silly to you? Because it sure does to me.
