I don't know for sure, but I can take a guess at a few things I've noticed.
Restaurants everywhere. Down here it's a lifestyle. People eat out at least 7 times a week, getting meals $15 to $25 on average. I think it's insane.
Everything is way too far apart to walk to. Imagine a suburb with a kroger at 1 end and 700 little stores in a minimall at the other. Somewhere around the corner is an 11-lane highway.
Summertime here isn't nice! Is it possible to have 100% humidity? If so, they have it. I consider myself very fit, probably in the "8 out of 10" scale, and the summer heat last year literally drained me. I could barely walk around the zoo.
On the plus side, groceries are relatively cheap here. Gas is cheap: $1.58 last night, 87 octane, Exxon. There are lots of gyms. 24hr fitness, Balley, YMCA, independant (non-chain) ones, and city-run ones in the various districts.
Personally, I blame it all on the mexican cheese sauce.
