As much as liberals like to think America is kind and open we are pretty far off from seeing a female/minority Pres.

Hahaha.. I don't understand how you can make statements like this and not kick yourself in the ass.

We aren't ready for a female or black President BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

-Nah-

Yeah..people like me. The majority of America is like me somewhat. Btw, we aren't going anywhere..hell racism is getting stronger in the South.

As for "not being ready for a female/black president", *shrug* more a matter of there aren't any qualified candidates who are willing & capable of stepping up and winning. While there probably is some bias against such a candidate, a well qualified one could still win.

e.g. Colin Powell still retains very high personal approval ratings and could very possibly win an election.

Also, in the past the 'minority' candidates who lost didn't lose because they were minorities, but because they hitched their star to losers.

e.g. Geraldine Ferraro didn't become VP not because she was a woman, but because Mondale was such a horrific candidate.

Oh, and if you think the country isn't 'ready' for it I'd like to point out that the 3rd (arguably 2nd) most powerful man in the world is African American. (SecState for those who don't understand the hierarchy of our government).

Well yeah EXCEPT for the small fact that the Secretary of State doesn't have to be elected in a nationwide election; he's appointed. He doesn't have to be charismatic or well-liked; he just has to be good at what he does. He doesn't have to convince the masses he's going to push for policy or laws that help them; he just takes orders. If he ever became President he would be shoved into the position because of the way the succession works; not because people actually wanted him there.

If think any cabinet level appointment is not as motivated by polling as the presidency could ever be you are WOEFULLY mistaken. Further, every cabinet appointment has to be approved by the people's duely elected representatives in Congress. In the past unpopular and dislikable men and women could be appointed, such is not the case now. You have to have substantial creditentals to even make the post much less get appointed for it.

Finally, if you think the cabinet positions just "take orders" again you are very mistaken. While they might be handed a general policy, it is still up to the secretary to figure out how to impliment that policy and in that implimentation it gets shaped a very great deal.

You're being pedantic. I was saying that no matter who it is and in what position you're talking about, most of the south and the midwest won't vote for blacks or women into office on the mere principle that "it's not their place". It's these same people who claim we aren't ready for a minority or female President, who are, ironically, the ones who would oppose them coming to power. Well, when *are* we going to be ready at that rate?

I don't give a flying f**k about how the government works or how woefully mistaken I am about it.

Assuming you are correct that us folks in the south & midwest aren't 'ready' for it", how do ya get ready? Give it another few years. Wasn't long ago at all when the idea of a black president was something that'd illict laughs. Now its more seen as a matter of time. Lotta progress is implicit in that simple change of view.
