Lawsuit: 'Grand Theft Auto' Led Teen to Kill
Tuesday, February 15, 2005

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A lawsuit claims the video game "Grand Theft Auto (search)" led a teenager to shoot two police officers and a dispatcher to death in 2003, mirroring violent acts depicted in the popular game.

The suit announced Tuesday seeks damages from the game's manufacturers and two stores that allegedly sold it to Devin Thompson (search), now 18.

An attorney for relatives of two of the victims said Thompson, who is charged with murder, had played the video game repeatedly.

Thompson is accused of killing the three men in June 2003 after being brought to the Fayette police station on suspicion of driving a stolen car. Thompson allegedly grabbed one of the officer's guns, shot him and the other two, then fled in a patrol car.

The suit alleges Thompson purchased "Grand Theft Auto III" at the Gamestop (search) in Jasper and "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" at the Jasper Wal-Mart when he was under 17. The games, which depict police killings and other acts of violence, are rated M, meaning they are appropriate for those 17 or older.

"What has happened in Alabama is that four companies participated in the training of Devin ... to kill three men," attorney Jack Thompson told The Tuscaloosa News, which reported the suit's filing.

Named in the suit are Wal-Mart Stores (search) and Gamestop along with Take-Two Interactive Software, the manufacturer of the games, and Sony Computer Entertainment, the maker of the PlayStation 2.

Messages left for officials of three of the companies were not immediately returned. There was no answer at the listing for Gamestop in Grapevine, Texas.

At a December hearing, authorities said Devin Thompson, when he was apprehended, told officers, "Life is a video game. You've got to die sometime."

Isn't it easy to make it through life when you do not have to take responsibility for your own actions?

My real life sensitivty is low as well and I tend to say things that people find offensive. Due to this, people at work complained to HR and I had to have a meeting with HR about it and I got in trouble =)

lol I think i told this story once before but in history last year the teacher was talking about the japanese invasion on china at some point in history and was saying how they would go through villages and kill everyman and then rape all the women over and over untill they killed them. he went on to say how there would be like 20 guys in a row raping one woman. I took it upon myself to attempt to lighten the mood with a poor joke at the wrong time. I blurted out, "Man, must have sucked to go last." IIRC two people laughed realy hard, the teachers jaw dropped and everyone else went dead silent.

Oh well.

How did he get into a position to grab an officer's gun?

I'm not saying this isn't funny because in alot of ways it is. But I do reserve a general respect for the victims and their families. Just try to imagine how much emotion is going to be in that courtroom. I would be pretty shook up if my father, brother or son was killed by some kid trying to immitate a video game

Do I think it was funny that 3 policemen were shot and killed? No..

Do I think it was funny that they blamed it on Walmart and GTA? Yes..

I mean what kind of logic do people use when trying to pin this on a video game? I could go out dressed in a black jacket, sunglasses riding around on a motorcycle shooting people with the first name of john or the last name of connor and people would blame it on The Terminator.

Fact is, it's that boys own fault for what he did and he should get the chair first of all for being a d*****s and second of all for committing murder.

greed is getting way the f**k outta control here. everyone just wants a buck. if you were smoking 50 years ago and got addicted when the cigarette companies were falsely advertising, then you deserve cash for it. anyone who willingly lights up over the past 30 years doesn't have that false claim and can eat shit and die for their INFORMED choice.

you wanna sue the gaming industry over this kids massive playing of this game and killing 2 police officers? well i guess you are also obligated to sue the car manufacturer as well. after all, he was pulled over driving a stolen vehicle. without the car, the guy might/might not have been caught. the car was crucial into his being caught in this instance. so the auto manufacturer is responsible as much as the gaming industry.

NOT!

its all b******t and people just trying to make a buck or do/say anything to stay out of jail.

i know how to end the madness! the next time someone murders and says god told them to do it. everyone connected to that person needs to sue the church. if the people who kill because of video games are not insane then the people who kill because god tells them to sure as hell arnt.

the deal was. he was arrested for stealing a car. when they took him in to book him he grabbed a gun from an officer that should have had all the guns locked up when they brought him in. He shot 3 officers, stole a cop car and then drove all the way to Mississippi before being arrested again.

Also, 8.9 billion other kids play GTA and they haven't killed anyone, so is there still something wrong with the game?

If something you experience (movie, game, music) causes you to commit violent crimes, the problem is you, not the experience.
