Trying to make scanned in pics smaller, but somehow they suck. Very unsharp and blocky. (see examples)

I'm using LView Pro on Windows 98.
Been fiddling with image filters and gamma/contrast settings, but that's about it. The pics are for titlepages of the chapters of my thesis (at least when I get them to not suck so much). They need to be in the 600 x 600 range (qua size). Any tips how to make them better would be greatly appreciated.

Scanned one

Smaller version =(

ya =(

What does the image resizer do that the resize button on LView Pro doesn't do though?

If it works real well I can always take the pics to a friend with xp.

i dont know what lview does, it would seem that it screws up the image quality

ive never had an image quality problem with image resizer

when you install it on windows XP, just take the image file and right click it and it will have a "Resize Pictures" option, use that with custom settings to resize to whatever you want

i mainly use it for pictures so the aspect ratio remains the same, just make sure your pixel x pixel count is in the correct ratio when you resize

Ok I can try that. But the image resize button on LView Pro also accounts for aspect ratio so I don't know why it f***s it up then. It should work as far as I know.

I've had bad luck resizing scanned pictures in anything, it seems like there's some fractal type irregularities that can show up when you scan things in, and shrinking the picture tends to amplify those irregularities, it seems especially bad with older daguerreotype and b&w photos.

I just used gimp =) www.gimp.org ... it has a "scale image" option and you can choose the compression for either smaller file size or better looking files with lower compression =)
