It's common here in Norway to try to get your way out of serving your time. Males from 18 and up are all called in to do 9 or 12 months of military time. If you are studying, they won't call you in until you are finished with your education. You can choose what branch you want in, close to home or not, etc...The military needs about 80% of those that are called in, so there is a big 20% that don't even get called in, or fake their way out.
I've heard many stories how people have lied their way to not serving. Quite amusing link.
