So how can you tell if the news media really is liberal?
Here's how researchers from UCLA did it - find out how liberal or conservative various senators are. That's easy enough - ADA gives scores (on a 0-100 scale) to members of Congress based on their legislation. So on one end, Tom DeLay gets a score of 4.7 (very conservative) and Maxine Waters gets a score of 99.6 (very liberal). (The study goes from 1993-2002.)
Next, find out which news publications and media outlets those senators use to support their legislation, as cited in their speeches and the Congressional record. From that, determine the score of those media outlets. For instance if Bill Frist cites news provider XYZ often, then it gets a conservative ratings tilt in proportion to Bill Frist's own conservative rating. Ditto (in reverse) for Ted Kennedy.
So here are the scores for various senators
(0 = most conservative, 100 = most liberal)
99.6 - Maxine Waters (D.-Calif.)
88.8 - Ted Kennedy (D.-Mass.)
87.6 - John Kerry (D.-Mass.)
84.3 - average Democrat
80.9 - Tom Daschle (D.-S.D.)
74.2 - Joe Lieberman (D-Ct.)
68.2 - Constance Morella (R-Md.)
63.7 - Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.)
59.5 - John Breaux (D-La.)
54.6 - Christopher Shays (R-Ct.)
51.3 - Arlen Specter (R-Pa.)
50.3 - James Leach (R-Iowa)
49.7 - Howell Heflin (D-Ala.)
48.6 - Tom Campbell (R-Ca.)
48.0 - Sam Nunn (D-Ga.)
46.9 - Dave McCurdy (D-Ok.)
43.0 - Olympia Snowe (R-Me.)
39.3 - Susan Collins (R-Me.)
36.1 - Charlie Stenholm (D-Tex.)
35.8 - Rick Lazio (R-N.Y.)
26.7 - Tom Ridge (R-Pa.)
21.5 - Nathan Deal (D-Ga.)
17.7 - Joe Scarborough (R.-Fla.)
16.1 - average Republican
12.7 - John McCain (R.-Ariz.)
10.3 - Bill Frist (R.-Tenn.)
04.7 - Tom Delay (R.-Tex.)
And here are the scores for the news outlets. They are listed in order of "distance from center", meaning that the ones at the top of the list (Newshour, CNN NewsNight) are the closest to a center score of 50 (or "fair and balanced", if you like), while the ones at the bottom of the list (New York Times, Wall Street Journal) are the most off-center (or, if you prefer, "biased")
(0 = most conservative, 100 = most liberal)
55.8 - Newshour with Jim Lehrer
56.0 - CNN NewsNight with Aaron Brown
56.1 - ABC Good Morning America
60.4 - Drudge Report
39.7 - Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume
61.0 - ABC World News Tonight
61.6 - NBC Nightly News
63.4 - USA Today
64.0 - NBC Today Show
35.4 - Washington Times
65.4 - Time Magazine
65.8 - U.S. News and World Report
66.3 - NPR Morning Edition
66.3 - Newsweek
66.6 - CBS Early Show
66.6 - Washington Post
70.0 - LA Times
73.7 - CBS Evening News
73.7 - New York Times
85.1 - Wall Street Journal
The average score of all twenty news outlets is 62.6, a good tilt to the left. In fact, only two news sources in this study tilted to the right - "Special Report" on Fox News, and the Washington Times.
Just confirming what everyone already knew - Fox News tilts to the right, and just about everyone else tilts to the left.
Here's UCLA's press release and the published study itself.

True but only slightly less than Bush.
As far as the chart goes you can skew any numbers any way you like. While I do believe the media is balanced to the left, if you watch fox news you would know why they dont go to the right.
Islamics fundamentalists have Al Jazeera, we have Fox News.

This hardly qualifies as news. In fact, America has a whole leans to the left. So why do we have a conservative president? Sadly, the average American doesn't vote, either.

Wrong! Try again. More Americans voted in the last elelction then ever before. And NO, America as a whole doesn't lean to the left, that's just what the media wants you to believe...pls continue to get mediawashed to prove our point.

Actually I think its the other way around. The Conservatives want you to believe there are more fundamentalists than there truly are. After 9/11 Bush earned enough political points to win re-election. Without 9/11 he doesnt win. Scare tactics work, thats why they are used.

So, Maxine Waters has a subscription to the New York Times and only time to read one newspaper - that doesn't tell me anything about the content of the times' articles.
From the study:
| Quote: | | We estimate that the centrist US voter during the late 1990s had a left-right ideology approximatly equal to that of Arlen Specter (R-PA) or Sam Nunn (D-GA). Meanwhile, we estimate that the average New York Times article is ideologically very similiar to the average speech by Joe Lieberman (D-CT). Next, since vote scores show Lieberman to be more liberal then Specter or Nunn, our method concluded that the New York Times has a liberal bias. |
| Quote: |
For instance, on March 28, 2002, the Washington Times, the most conservative outlet by our measure, reported that Congress earmarket $304,000 to restore opera houses in Connecticut, Michigan and Washington. Meanwhile, none of the other outlets in our sample mentioned this fact. Moreover, the Washington Times article failed to mention facts that a liberal would be more likely to note. For instance, it did not mention that the $304,000 comprises a very tiny portion of the federal budget. |
Yes, assuming that your target audience is aware of how little $304,000 in a $3 trillion federal budget is, is a clear indication of a conservative bias.
Who would have thought that outlets read and watched around the globe don't report about one of hundreds or even thousands of earmarks worth less than some cars...

I would say I was about a 60, but considered myself a 50. I would like to think I'm a 50, but it's hard to be entirely moderate when there is an imbalance of power.
