You can edit the boot menu from within xp, i belive in msconfig. Start -> run ->type msconfig and hit enter I'm not sure what your problem is since you did't really specify what the problem was to well |
I usually use that for Startups but I'll see if anything I can do there. Okay I see it, can't delete it =\
If you only have 1 version of XP installed then the other "versions" are just the same XP but with different boot options. Check the windows path in msconfig boot tab. If msconfig won't let you edit the boot.ini then edit C:\boot.ini (might not be C:\) in notepad. It will be a hidden system folder so you will need to enable viewing them in the folder options. Edit it there, google for a tutorial if you are afraid of messing things up or prone to messing things up
Here is a link to some instructions on boot.ini, it also has an alternate way of editing the file.

Glad you made this thread.
Anyway, I'm having sound problems.
OK, I use a Windows Vista and the computer came with a built-in sound card. Mind you, it was crap and not very loud. Well, we've had this computer a little over a year and last night the sound decided to stop working. The little picture thing of the speaker has an X on it. When I move my mouse over to it, it will say "No Audio Output Device is installed".
And one last problem. I get this bubble pop up on the black bar at the bottom of my screen. Task bar? I believe that's what its called. Anyways, the bubble will come up and say "Low disk space in recovery D:"
Anyone care to help, I'd greatly appreciate it

Okies, well. For the sound it might have died on you in which case you will need a pci one or usb one to replace it. To check that it is properly enabled go into your bios and check that the integrated audio is enabled. Also, uninstall the drivers and replace them with the newest version ones. You need to grab those from your manufacturer's / suppliers website. Try that 1st and let us know how it goes.
Low disk space on recovery D: means that you have a partition on your harddrive that is used to backup your system is filling up. Is it a dell or similar? Was the recovery partition there when you bought it? Do you do regular backups to that partition?

Thanks for getting back
OK, I'm going to try the sound problem. Sound cards are expensive though, aren't they?
And I don't know what you mean by the recovery partition. And to answer your question, the computer is a Compaq ... atleast I hope that answers your question
Sound cards can be expensive. But if you don't need crazy high quality sound usually one from 5 or more years ago should suffice. I'm using a soundblaster from a 400 MHz pentium 2 on my server.
The recovery partition is a section on a harddrive that has been asigned to bring your computer back to manufacturer defaults or do some slight repairs. Usually if you have one then they don't ship you a windows cd and you need to burn your own recovery cd. I will be able to help you more tonight but I have to head off ot work now

Ugh...I have a problem when buying a LCD monitor. Googled it and read but a lot of questions ask if higher ratio in contrast is better, no answers.
If you know about LCD monitors let me know what one would be good. I'm thinking of not going over 24 inch.

So I came up with this. 20k:1 (Dynamic Contrast) and another one would be 3000:1, most I seen are 1000:1, highest I seen was 5000:1 thats not DC.

Um, well early next year I believe tv is moving from 4:3 to either 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. Incase you are considering not going for a widescreen (16:9 or 16:10) monitor.
What you want in a monitor is a low responce time, and high contrast ratio. Aside from that if it is possible make sure you can test the monitor in store (they might have one set up, futureshop usually does) and make sure that it doesn't blur too much. Some LCD monitors have a noticable blur that is irritating when gaming. Think about things like where you are placing it. Getting a glossy screen can be nice during the night, but during the day can act much like a mirror. Matte screens if they have light hitting them are hard to see.

Wahh! I Don't understand all this computer lingo.
I typed in Google "Windows Vista Audio Output device" and went to this website:

Let see if the download helps.

Well that was a waste of time. I installed it and used the scan option. The scan had come up with 16 different things that needed to be fixed. The problem is, its needs a registration key, which I'm pretty much sure you need to buy.
God I hate computers...

Well my brothers LCD Monitor is 17 inch or so idk but it does have any glares from the light in the room or sunlight. I'm going for LCD Monitor not tv since their better for gaming. So 20k:1 Dynamic Contrast is better then 1000 to 5000:1 Contrast without Dynamic lol?

Better... yes... will you notice? Probably not... is it worth lots of extra money? Doubt it. 1000:1 or higher is more then good enough

No its not extra cash. Around the $300.
