Hi,

I heard somewhere that Americans have the least ammount of passports per capita over any other country.

Seeing as this is a mostly American board, im curious to how many americans have actually left their country to go aboard. And Canada and Mexico dont count!

Different culture. You're from a culture where you need to have one in order to move about the very limited countries in Europe, for example. It is a biased question you are asking.

Europeans travel around where they live, just like Americans do, except in europe, you need a passport. You could say the same of driver's licenses, which allows folks to travel about the US in a much larger area to cover.

What's your point?

I have been to many countries while in the military. Only canada since I left the military. But, I do have a passport and plan on going to europe again, its a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Celestra, you ready for me?

This is what I'll be wearing when I get off the plane, its my newest suit.

You don't need a passport to travel in Europe, as a European. It has been this way for years now.

You'd think this would go without question since they're on the same continent as the U.S.

Anyway, yes, I've been to Europe. I guess since I've been to Hawaii quite a few times and Tahiti once I've been off the continent quite a few times but I don't really count those.

I'm curious what countries were in the study you read. I don't have any numbers to back it up but I would guess that quite a few African, South American, and probably Asian countries have less passports than the U.S.

In the two trips I've made across the pond with the Navy, I've stopped in port in Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Scotland, Eengland, and I've also spent some time on Sicily and some of the other islands off of Italy, with the island of Capri (minus the touristy marina area) being by far my favorite place in the world to date. I want to learn Italian and retire there... not necessarily in that order, heh. It's just beautiful. The first time I went overseas was for a month long training cruise one summer while I was in college. The second time was last fall, when we went over for 7 weeks for a NATO exercise. This winter we're going to the Mediterranean for our full 6 month deployment. There's a good chance we'll hit a ton of ports, mmmyeah. I plan to take my next tour on an AEGIS Destroyer out of San Diego... partially for the ship, mostly for the chance to see the west coast, and the Pacific rim ports on that deployment. After that, I'll have seen much of the world worth seeing, and then it's only a matter of taking a vacation every now and then to the places that the Navy can't take you.

If you serve 2 good tours in the Navy, you'll see a lot; make it a career and stay for 20 years, and you'll literally see the world. I like to think I'm a better person for it. Sort of gives a new perspective on things, and it's always good for a laugh when you get into an argument about something silly like American vs Foreign cars, and you can see the poor, ignorant saps who've never left the US clinging onto their GM biases, swearing up and down that everything American is as perfect as it comes, and basically bleeding red, white, and blue. Well boys, until you've seen the rest of the world you don't really know what you're missing out on.. or how wrong you are.

Plus, the sky on a clear night out in the middle of the Atlantic, 2000 miles from land, is just breathtaking. That's not a different country per se, but it's interesting enough to merit mentioning.

Lived in Germany for three years, while Dad was stationed at Kaiserlautern (sp?). We lived on the "economy", in a small German town called Bann...no, not Bonn.

<img src=http://www.bann2000.de/x-bann-r.jpg width=640 height=265>

We virtually went on the road every weekend, seeing new castles and other sights. Been to England, France, Belgium, Holland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, etc...

I have been to france, belgium, sweden, finland, norway, england, scotland, ireland, spain, italy, greece, croatia, turkey, russia, denmark, estonia... I think I would like to go back to Turkey and Russia the most... but Ill be back in France/Italy/Greece in a few weeks.

some things you have to realize about this poll is that 1. in the US we dont need passports for anything but leaving the country, I dont know if thats the case in other places. 2. Relatively speaking the US does offer most of what you can easily see right within its borders.. I mean if you live in Europe its not that expensive to travel to a non EU nation ( and the no passports free travel thing is relatively new) so you have many more people traveling to see the sites because its cheaper to go to them, here in the US its incredibly expensive to leave and go anywhere of note, Mexico is nice but it has a really bad rap and honestly the only plus it has are the aztec ruins and crap... canada.. i mean seen one tree seen um all eh? So for many americans on a budget the choice is then narrowed down to what you can do here in the USA, where in Europe for the same amount of money you can easily go from france to say Egypt... so in my view its less a matter of differing cultures and more a matter of differing geographical location and circumstance.

Lived in Costa Rica then moved to Colombia for a little bit before coming back to the States when I was younger. Been meaning to go to Japan for years but can never seem to do it (used to be 'cause I didn't have the money, now it's 'cause I don't have the time).

I've seen the rest of the world. I even have optional citizenship in another country. I can say with great experience that no nation approaches this great land on any level.
