It's not a fair comparison at all. A good portion of the world wasn't even known to the Romans. It was a very, very different world to them. They had no means to travel great distances quickly, no means to communicate over long distances efficiently, and no way to keep dibs on what was going on in other parts of the Empire effectively. So, given what they had, I think they did a bang up job of holding up the Empire for as long as they did.
Now.. how does that compare with how the US currently holds sway over the planet? Oh that's right.. it doesn't.
The current influence the US has right now over the planet is unmistakable. It's the best, granted. But to say no one else has ever matched it.. How can you qualify that when there's no competition?
-Nah- |
i definitly agree, technology is a building process, the things the romans figured out helped the next people, which in turn helped the next people, which in turn helped the next. I dont believe we can be considered great simply because we are the most recent (which following the line of technological supremacy would almost always be true with exception of a few cases.) The romans were very advanced for their time also, in terms of medicine, military and architecture they were unmatched. Other countrys like greece and egypt might have showed them how to do it initially but they did it best... very similar to the industrial revolution here and learning the techniques from england only to surpass them later. I believe we will be judged not so much by culture and what we believed in now because honestly in 200 years no one will care. The learning of the english language and exporting america ideas of democracy will have a lasting effect but I think the most notable achievement for us has been the technological revolution and mainly the internet... there has been cultural difusion before but never a massive information network that compiles all human knowledge and is accessable from anywhere on the globe... in my view that and the space program will be the things america is remembered for a thousand years from now... question is gonna be whether those books say 'they took a few tentative steps into space and came home' or 'they started a new age of exploration and human expansion'.. so are we columbus or the vikings?

I never denied that the US is partly an empire of circumstance. But it is still an empire unparallelled.

American music is everywhere. It's an excellent example in support of my claim that America is the greatest superpower to ever grace the plant. |
Such a strange source of mixed pride, no? Don't you despise people like 50 cent and Snoop Dogg?
-Nah- |
I have some sort of weird respect for Snoop Dogg...not for 50 cent. But that's besides the point. There was a thread about this before and everyone criticized me for claiming that Rome did not compare to the US in terms of it's imperial influence. But as good was Rome was at assimilating cultures, they never transferred so many elements of their culture so far across the globe. This is my point. Even groups that generally "hate" America continue to eat up American culture. We don't need to take over countries to be imperialistic. It just comes naturally. |
Of course... which is why it's mixed pride.. people whom you don't like are often your ambassadors to the world. One shouldn't wonder why people think Americans are so f****d up, if you think about the things they see coming from this country.
-Nah- |
I think both need to be killed. The chimps who make the noise and the chimps who listen to it. It would make for a better world.
