So this gamer I know was swearing that CS is the best thing since Jesus and convinces me I have to buy it. I played a lot of Rainbow Six back in the day so I figure 'what the hell' and pick up a copy.
Issue#1: After downloading three different patches, my shit still ain't right. I can't connect to any servers and play. I download a 4th patch from File Planet. After "waiting in line" for 20 minutes I am informed that I currently have version 1.0.0.0 and this patch is only for going form 1.0.0.4 to 1.0.0.5 and that I should download the full retail version of 1.0.0.5. I'm standing in line right now for that patch.
Question: Is there a better, faster way to download patches?
Issue#2: I know when I played RS that map mods were a big deal. Are there any really good CS sites where I can download the latest/greatest mods? I don't want to run into any issues where I can't play on certain servers because I lack a popular mod.
Issue #3: Is this ONLY a multi-player game? Are there no single-player maps?
In general, what do I need to know in order to get up and running. I got this game straight off the shelf at EB Games during lunch today. Other than my futile attempts at patching, I haven't done anything else. Well, I did waste about 20 minutes with the tutorial. I noticeda few of you posted CS related stuff earlier so I'm hoping I can get some good advice from you. However, since this is Realpoor, I'm not holding my breath.

custom maps suck. be like the rest of the people that play CS and just play shit dust/dust2/aztec all the time.
basically, find a server that you get a good ping to, stick to it... have fun.
I recommend (sp?) GameTiger to find your games / players / maps. Is MUCH better than GameSpy and the in-game browser put together.

Attempting to download the full retail patch from Fileplanet now.
Any links to better sites would be appreciated. Also, any tips on good servers to play on or newbie information is needed.

Counterstrike sucks ass. Not only is it one of the slowest FPS mods in existence but it's jam packed with hacks. The only reason why it is so popular is for the same reasons why EverQuest is popular, it caters to newbies. Anyone can be good at it, as it requires very little skill.
It's been a long time since I've even bothered to install CS but here goes... First of all, I bought half-life in like 1998 when it first came out, this was before counterstrike even existed. It seems you went out and bought the "Half-life: Counterstrike" edition or some shit (there are 190283190283 different versions of this game, it's been reboxed more times than Tomb Raider) so I'll go through my typical patching process...
Install the game...

Should be able to play but who knows. Like I said, the game has been reboxed too many times to count.
Natural Selection is by far the best mod availible for Half-life. Counterstrike is over-rated. I'd highly recommend playing it instead.

Natual Selection might be ok for some, but I thought it was very rough and unpolished. Day of Defeat, a free mod from their website, is the shit however. DoD is a WW2 mod, with very balanced guns and other weapons.
Did you buy Counter strike or Half life Fluxus? Counter strike might be full of hacks and noobs, but Half life is a single player experience very much worth playing. The plot, the weapons, the enemies.. as much a part of fps gaming as Doom or Quake, or more so.

You know what the world needs? About a million more WW2 mods. Yeah.

I bought Counter-Strike. Apparently it is only a multi-player game. I finally downloaded the correct patch (Full Retail 1005 patch) and joined a game.
Game 1: Me and some other guy PvP on a pretty big map. Even though he killed me 13 times straight before I got him, it wasn't that bad. The graphics are s****y, but there wasn't any lag and eventually I learned a few basics. For example, I learned how to reply to his messages, learned that I could buy guns and equipment when each game started (yeah, I was running around with no armor and using a pistol) and learned a little about the different guns.
Game 2: Decided to join a game with more people. Apparently it was a Clan server with like 8 of them versus 3-4 scrubs (like me) that happened to wander onto their server. To make matters worse, they were all using voice communication and making fun of my inability to reply to them. To cap off the humiliation, they were f*****g French! I spent about 20 minutes here blindly charging into battle until I killed one of them, taunted him and then quit. 
I'll probably play it for a while though. I at least want to hook up with my buddy on his server. Thanks for the advice.
