Back up quickly! I had this happen to my 10 gig drive one day and then a few days later it no longer booted up and I lost a lot of important data that I didn't back up.

In addition, Western Digital drives SUCK!
Get a Maxtor 7200 rpm and live happy
WD used to be good then went downhill fast, for some reason.

The "Click of Death" it is. I have seen/heard it too many times.
In response to Rootus's post, however, WD let Quality Control drop thru the floor, a few years past. I have replaced 3 WD drives and reccomended my clients/friends get Maxtor or any other drive and they have never complained.
Maybe i should tell them to get WD drives, just so i can get some work going again, tho.
hmmm
s***w WD. that is all.

i've had bad luck with Maxtors. WD are reliable from the two i've bought and still running good.

I've owned like 50 hard drives, about 20 maxtors, 20 western digitals, and a few others. I've had 5 WD's go bad, and 6 Maxtor's go bad. I had a Champ brand 2gig that failed in 2 years. I've used Quantum drives, and every one i've owned had problems or failed within 3 years. Most of my maxtors failed within 6 months or at about 3 years. My western digitals lasted 2 years-4 years before they failed. The ones that didn't fail i sold or still work.
I've heard that the orientation of your harddrive when it's mounted can hurt your reliability long term, you shouldn't mount it any other way then flat with label side up. The reasons i've heard involve the cheap ball bearings inside the drives that don't stand up well to gravity messing with them when their upside down or sideways/longways. Also be sure to keep space between harddrives and floppys/cds/other hds because of the heat issues. I once had a small case with barely enough room for 2 hds, they were mounted right on top of each other with like 2mm space between them. They used to get pretty hot, even with 2 case fans. As you might guess, one did finally fail on me after about 2 years (a maxtor).

Same here, I have gone through over a hundred drives and the only high return fail rate drive was the IBM 30 gig, man that harddrive sucked.
other then that all other brands seemed to last fairly well.
I really like Western dig. and Maxtor.
What really strange is that Pre 686 harddrives last for freaken ever and can be droped, left outside, overheated and yet they still work fine. I have some drives laying around here the are 512mb that are like 10 years old and still work fine. I use them to swap data ect.
welcome to the disposable age!

by a scsi. they are nice and clickity. very asstacular. at least my ibm is. its a nice utlra 320 drive but its to noisy for me.
stupid purchas on my part to. the scsi adapter needed to use 320 mode only comes in pci-x. oh well 160 was good enough for me.
anyway segate makes good drives, but they are expensive. WD used to be great but they are letting the race with maxtor to make the biggest drive at the cheaper cost interfere with the quality they use to have.
