Now, of course I know that the Eye of the North release has been out for only a month or so now, but that isn't really an expansion, at least not a stand-alone one. What I want to know is whether a real expansion is planned for any time soon, one that won't require you to have one of the previous ones?

First of all, I never heard of anyone disqualifying GWEN from "expansion status" just because it requires an older expansion to be installed. That's a very original approach there, though I don't know how much sense it makes.
Second, with GW2 on the horizon, I wouldn’t hold my breath for the next expansion to GW1.
