I started playing only recently, and so far I'm loving it – I tried out a few character profession combos, but can't really settle on one. For the most part I've been trying to decide on whether to go for a necromancer / something, or a ranger / something. Obviously, I'm into pets & minions, but which of these two is better at it?

That's a hard question to answer, and different players will give you different views on the issue. However, you need to keep in mind that, pets aside, necros and rangers are very different character types. Whichever one suits your playing style better would be the way to go. And if you enjoy both types, why not make a necro/ranger and give it a shot?
