Anyone else pick this up today?

I've been playing number two for about two hours so far and I lost 3 times on the second battle before beating it, so im getting the feeling it's gonna be a very tough game.

The battle system is very cool though and the story is fairly decent so far so it seems like it was definetly worth the 50 bucks for two games that are supposed to take about 40-50 hours each.

The battle system is kinda like Ark the Lad/ FF Tactics but without a grid system or being turn based which made it kinda difficult for me to get a handle of at first.

Pick it up if you like strategy RPGs

Wow, some of these later battles in Growlanser 2 are f*****g insane. I haven't even played 3 yet, though.

Yeah im still stuck on one of the boss battles in 2, these battles are getting fairly rediculous... at least you can level up easily in the game.

Not sure how far you are, but Wolfgang's giant neural armor was one b***h of a fight, mainly because my ring/gem collection is next to worthless. But I'm anal, I kind of had to keep playing the fight until I beat all the neural armors, both his hands and the body. But I did get a 9-9-9 ring with insane stats from one of the arms, so that's pretty cool.

Ya im at the boss after that Wolfgang fight, he took me a couple tries because I kept trying to rush everyone up the center like a d*****s until I realized I could stick my casters in a side room with a tank guarding an entrance and just send up my melee guys.

I got that 9-9-9 ring also, it owns. Did you get another 9-9-9 ring from an earlier boss fight too?

I'm not sure. The fight before I had a hell of a time trying to get every chest and kill off the mages/archers with just Wein.

Dash is your friend. Techs really are the key to winning most battles.

But, man, what the f**k is with the cast time on Refine? It's like 300+ for lv. 8. Why they included a lv. 9 is beyond me, seeing as you can only have a squad of 8. Perhaps it's for those battles where you've got to limit the casualties. But, even still, Sereb is the only character without heals that has it. And when you have Strengthen Magic with Sereb, you're better off AE nuking enemies into the ground. Even interrupting it at a lower rank (with Strengthen Magic) usually offs anyone you need to.

I missed Sereb somehow.. and some other dude with white hair Confused

I got that Brett guy, he looks like a generic Burnstein soldier but he is pretty good.

Weird. I knew the story was branching, but I guess somehow I got Sereb.

I got Brett as well. He's okay, he's the tank I used (Cycle up + Tech: Counter) to tank the three neural armors in the aforementioned battle. I rushed the oncoming guys with Wein/Carmain/Xenos, left him at the back on counter, and had Sereb in a side room refining.

Dude, I'm amazed at how hard this game can get. At times when you realize it's the game's fault (i.e. not being able to walk around a character) it's just lame. But some things are just plain your fault when you f**k up.

Didn't Sareb die for you when he jumped inside the big demon dude when you got Arieta?

I think we both missed that other guy then (the dude holding the two sword/stick things in the beginning FMV with white hair). Because I guess you get him fairly early doing some side quest stuff with visiting his cottage.

Positioning is a huge part of the battle, it's almost like football on some battles where you need your blockers to make sure no one gets through to your casters or you're fukt.

And like you said I think the reason for the lvl 9 refine is for when there are npcs you gotta protect, although I don't think i've run into a single battle where npcs were getting poisoned.

Is this a tactics RPG or something? The screenshots I've seen don't exactly show very much.

Yeah. It's basically a gridless tactics game. It's definitely worth a try. The games are both around 20+ hours of gameplay with branching storylines and multiple endings. Growlanser III, the second game in the package, seems to have a bit more character development and feels more like your average RPG (world map, random encounters, etc.)

Both games use the same engine for battles, so if you've played Growlanser II, you'll get the feel for III right off the bat (and vise versa).

And I'm actually liking the characters and storyline in III.

Once you get 9-9-9 rings with insane stats, it's pretty easy on the ex-game runs. =p

Oh and the level 9 gem... Endless Horizon, I think?

Put that and the disruption gem on Hans. No battle is hard after that.

I found this game hard for the first couple fights, but after that it was a cake walk.

But for the first time in a SRPG have I actually had to formulate a strategy in order to win (at least to get all Mission Complete). I had a lot of fun just becuase of that.

Same here. I stopped playing III and never got a chance to finish Wolfgang's story in II. I'll probably pop it back in when I'm done with Metroid Prime.
