I know it's more geared toward group play, but how much of an option is solo play? I hear there a re difficulty settings that can be set to "solo", supposedly easier, but is this viable? How far into the game can you play solo, and will you have to team up later on?

Basically, solo play just isn't worth it. It's very, very limited, even after that expansion which added some more options. Still, you just can't advance far beyond the first few dungeons (from 3 to 4, depending on which class you're playing), but later on it's just not possible. You'll have to find a group pretty soon.
