well i mean what else can we do when hardly anyone aroudn the ages of 18 to 30 vote? of course there are going to be laws passed like higher medicare and higher SS. I wholeheartily believe that these programs should be done away with, well not medicare so much as SS. Why should people now pay into SS when they know they will not be getting anything out of it? The people still on SS have made like 20x what they put into the fund and that's a problem we have to deal with, but the only way it can be dealt with is the voting action of younger people which so far isn't happening.

Over 90% of American workers participate in the Social Security system, contributing payroll taxes in exchange for publicly provided retirement, disability, and survivors' insurance for themselves and their families. In addition to providing near universal, as well as portable and inflation-resistant, insurance against earnings loss, the Social Security program has a redistributive function that shores up the retirement incomes of life-time low earners, a feature not available in private pension plans

Greenspan never ever ever said that the problems with social security are bushs fault. He said the same shit in clintons admin but no one cared then cause we loved clinton and he was perfect!! Obviously the spirit of bush was back in 1935 and helped develope a flawed prorgam and also his spirit was in the 1950s when he caused the baby boom and thus the current SS deficits.

Again, this issue isn't left vs right, republican vs democrat, liberal vs conservative, black vs white, man vs woman. The issue is that George Walker Bush has done a horrible job running our country. The worst president our nation has ever had to experience. I know both sides, I have intimate conversations with people of all ranges over these kind of issues.
Bush is doing things exactly how great people such as Eiesenhower, Jefferson, Washington, and his own father even said to look out for. Picking a president has come down to which one will do the lesser evils. We made the right choice in the year 2000, but unfortunately the popular vote was not heard to this 'pseudo-deomocracy.'
Educate yourself, make a decision for yourself. Make a list of things that are important to you. Do not listen to people who won't listen to you. I am capable of admitting I am wrong when I am wrong, and often I am, but I will not take criticism from anyone who doesn't have the humility to admit when they are wrong.
Here is my list of things I look for when viewing the candidates:
1) Civil liberties: Will my rights be protected. Will the government try to interfere more and more with my life?
2) Education: What is the goal for our country's children? Will an environment be provided so they can be educated in the best way possible? How will they fare compared to the rest of the world?
3) Economy: The US is becoming a service based economy. How can we develop more high tech, skilled jobs and remain competitive on the global market?
4) Environment: There is a limited amount of resources. PERIOD. How can we maintain our quality of life for ourselves and our children and their children...and so on and so forth.
Little side note for Phoenix:
What happened when Bush was announced the winner the first time? The Dow INSTANTLY fell 800 points. INSTANTLY. What happened when Gore was said to be the winner? The Dow rose 750 points back to equilibrium. What happened again when Bush was finally declared president? The market fell again and New York state alone lost 36,000 jobs more than expected.

You cannot do away with SS or Medicare in whole. They do need reform. But there are also many other things that need reform as well. There is too much red tape and inefficiency going on throughout America. To me that is singlehandedly by far the largest problem. I even think Tolanin and Phoenix have to agree with me on that. We need to become more efficient in every aspect. Too much money is spent on things that it doesn't need to be spent on. Clean up all the 'garbage' and we won't have messes such as these.

I agree, its not bushes fault tho, its been going on for a very very long time and is getting progressively worse, its just easier to see in times when the economy is down and money is tighter.

Phoenix has become the my new favorite board troller. I am assuming you are 100% self made, no help from your parents and your parents had no help from their grandparents. I too pay thousands and thousands into social security and I can only wish that I will be in the position where I am not eligible to receive it's benefits. Phoenix you are proving that you are exactly what is wrong with the world, not just the country. You me, me, me, me first, and me next attitude shows that you are a non-christian hypocrite. I guess you also think that all charity should be banned and all poor people should be burned. |
It's not charity, d*****t. Read my post. Young people have been distance by the elderly because of social security. There was a time they relied on us. Now they rely on the government. They sit alone in nursing homes yearning for death while we work overtime to pay the bloated interest-free fees. |

Anyone who looks at SS payments as more than a few dinners out, needs financial help.
I don't even count SS payments/benefits in my retirement plans.

paying money into ss is like burning it and then taking the ashes and trying to find pieces of the roll of twenties you had at the start enough to tape together a single bill.

I'm 42, I'm in the top 5 percent of money earners in the US. I have more to do that I want. In 8 years or so I will be in the top 1% of money earners. All before I'm 50.

Its because the country is in such debt that Greenspan is proposing this.
Why you cant grasp this simple truth is beyond me.
Anyway combine this with outsourcing peoples jobs away and flooding us with minimum wage hungry immigrants and we will have a country where only the Comfortable will be comforted.
All the rest will wind up with a standard of life that is less than it could have been.
Bush has run this country like a stumbling child king.

Kbarr who claims to be in the top 5 percent then eventually top 1 percent of the countries earners is of course going to suck the d**k of Bush.
Bush will save his rich old ass a few bucks.
But bear in mind, even if a democrat gets elected and raises his capital gains tax a few points, hes still going to be rich , sitting on his ass and linking pictures of cigars here at RP.
He wont lose shit.
The greater good is elevating the masses to a better lifestyle, not just sucking the bone of the rich.
The right wing would have you believe that if the rich exeuctives make bank, they will trickle down the love to the rest.
In truth the rich will get richer, the poor will have to fight off immigrants and outsourcing and somethings gonna trickle down alright and it aint love.

Ok, here's a challenge for WNWS, Compusmack, and the like: abolish SS, but provide us with a viable alternative. Tell us how we're going to support the elderly, the disabled, the widowed, etc. And remember, many of them have families that can't afford to house grandma and take care of her for 20 years.
Or, I suppose, we could just let them die? Would it be a 'tough shit and goodbye' then?
