Email I just got:
To whom it may concern;
In cooperation with the Department Of Homeland Security, Federal, State and Local Governments your account has been denied insurance from the Federal
Deposit Insurance Corporation due to suspected violations of the Patriot Act. While we have only a limited amount of evidence gathered on your account at
this time it is enough to suspect that currency violations may have occurred in your account and due to this activity we have withdrawn Federal Deposit
Insurance on your account until we verify that your account has not been used in a violation of the Patriot Act.
As a result Department Of Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge has advised the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to suspend all deposit insurance on
your account until such time as we can verify your identity and your account information.
Please verify through our IDVerify below. This information will be checked against a federal government database for identity verification. This only takes
up to a minute and when we have verified your identity you will be notified of said verification and all suspensions of insurance on your account will be
lifted.

The letter has a nice tone to it - sort of reminds me of the old Soviet Union.

Did a Properties on the sender line that said "FDIC" and it gave me this address Lonee_Morrie@aol.com
Bah, too old and seen too much to fall for that shit.....

The thing I don't get about it (other than the obvious fact that the gov wouldn't use email for this) is how was this supposed to get them any info? The link provided didn't work, but it did go to the real FDIC site. What was supposed to happen? Did they think people would respond to the email saying it didn't work and they'd say "ok, just email this info to me"? Or is there a virus that's writing bogus addresses for fdic.gov in people's hosts files?
Or was it just supposed to make people go "wtf"?

ROFL you can't loose FDIC insurance on an individaul account. Also the FDIC would not be emailing you Your bank would be contacting you. FDIC hsa nothign to do with enforcing Patriot Act.

Mainly.....I just don't get it.
What purpose did the email serve?
All it did was send me to the FDIC website. Am I missing something?
But then again, 99% of my email I just don't get ...... the whole mass marketing thing humors me. It's all either Viagra, Discount Cigs, Bigger Boobs, Bigger Schlong, Mortgages, or some chief Mahoolabombaske who wants me to help him dig up 40 billion pounds of gold that his sister hid in the garden when whitey overtook his land.
