From my experience, I feel that GMail has one of the better spam filters. Even with dozen of spam mails received per day, almost none of them ever gets into my actual inbox.
Newsletters that I sign up for, however, sometimes get on my nerve because of the frequency that they send stuff. An example is newegg.com, whose newsletters are sent much too often. I know it's my fault for signing up and I know that I could opt out at any time, but do they really need to send a newsletter tempting me to buy more stuff every 2-5 days? They're like legitimate spam.

Gmail is incredibly good at only putting spam in the spam folder. Hotmail tries, but often puts non-spam in there. I dont think gmail has messed up once. I get a lot of spam but i never notice it since it all goes into the spam folder.

You can still sign up for EVERYTHING on the net and keep control of the spam yourself if you use these simple (or not) steps:
1) Everytime you want to register for something on the web create a new email account (or group up several sites for one account).
2) Have this email account forwarded to your main email account.
3) If you start getting more spam, just check which email account it comes from, and delete that email address.
I admit that this is time-consuming, but if you have your own domain with limitless email accounts it goes quick and really works.

Generally I've found Gmail the best mail around. don't get much spam at all

If you go through the spam i found it simple to find unsubscribing spam e-mails and it actually cleared the spam i used to get, but I usually get 20-30 If you do anything get two gmail accounts one for sites you don't want spam and one for ones you could care less like registering and stuff.

i have a ghost gmail account. if i know a site is spam but i have to sign up for some reason i use that email. i get about 400 spam messages and min on that account. its really sad. (ive never actually timed it.)

I get 34 a day but that is due to my Other half signing up to things on my account. What I consider junk OH does not.
