| CNN wrote: |
CLARKSVILLE, Maryland (AP) -- Inspired by a high school assignment, Stephanie Haaser leaped onto a cafeteria table, shouted "End homophobia now!" and kissed classmate Katherine Pecore.
Haaser said she was making a statement on behalf of gay and l*****n students because she was bothered by the verbal and physical harassment they face.
Their principal said he respected what the heterosexual students were trying to do, but they needed to learn more appropriate ways to make a point. Haaser and Pecore were suspended for two days.
"It's highly inappropriate to stand on a table in the cafeteria and make out, whether the kiss was heterosexual or homosexual," said River Hill High School principal Scott Pfeifer. "I don't think there's a school in the country where parents would consider that appropriate behavior."
Haaser, a junior, said she chose to make the statement as part of an English class assignment, which required that she engage in a nonconformist act in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
"You hear derogatory comments in virtually every class," Haaser said. "It's not always spiteful -- someone might say, 'Oh that's so gay,' where 'gay' means stupid or dumb. But those comments can be really hurtful."
Haaser said teachers who hear such remarks rarely intervene.
River Hill administrators said they pride themselves on the school's respect for diversity. Pfeifer said the school has a Gay-Straight Alliance club and a diversity committee of students, teachers and parents. The school recently celebrated National Coming Out Day.
"I wouldn't put up River Hill as a national model," Pfeifer said, "but I would say we are as sensitive about these issues as anyone."
Raising awareness
The incident has sparked debate about tolerance at the school.
A few days after the kiss, juniors Mia Freyer and Anna Boyland staged a brief protest outside the school on behalf of the suspended students. They carried signs that read "Down with Homophobia" and "Don't: Hate and discriminate."
Joshua Lamont, a spokesman for the national Gay, l*****n and Straight Education Network, said there are just under 2,000 gay-straight alliance clubs at high schools and the number of clubs grew by 50 percent in the past year.
But there has been a growth of intolerance, as well, Lamont said. An annual survey of high school students found that more than 90 percent reported hearing homophobic remarks last year and more than 82 percent reported teachers heard the remarks but did nothing about them, Lamont said.
A third of the students who identified themselves as gay in the survey reported skipping school for fear of verbal or physical harassment.
"I fear harassment is the rule rather than the exception," Lamont said.
Eileen Woodbury, a special assistant to Howard County school superintendent John O'Rourke, said county school officials plan to strengthen staff development on diversity issues.
"I don't doubt that it happens in our schools as well and we're deeply concerned about the professional response," she said.
Haaser said the kiss has raised awareness of the problem.
"It's been wonderful to see and hear the discussions that have taken place at my school since the kiss. People are a lot more aware of the issue," she said. "And I like to think the hurtful, derogatory comments about gays have subsided, at least for a little while."

BULL f*****g SHIT ..
I challenge ANYONE to find 1 public high school in America where you don't see guys and girls making out ALL AROUND CAMPUS. But when 2 girls do it they get suspended... The school district should be sued for harrasment.

Back in my high school that wasn't allowed. You wouldn't get suspended, but they would put a stop to shinanigans like that.

ok f*g, every single school ive ever been to has rules against f*****g doing that shit on school grounds. if any teacher or admin sees you they tell you to break it up, if they catch you more then once, the punishment increases.

OK fuckwad, you just made my case for me ... "they tell you to break it up" they don't f*****g SUSPEND YOU ...
I'm not saying schools don't have rules against it .. I *AM* saying those rules are rarely enforced and when enforced it's usually something like "Hey you two break it up"

it doesnt show anything, those people who get caught in the halls making out, dont jump up in the middle of the lunch room and scream HEY LOOK AT ME DO WHATS AGAINST THE RULES. it was a more severe infraction of the rule, so it got a larger punishment.
thanks for making me actually explain such a simple concept to you, f*****g morons.

You f*****g waste of oxygen, THAT WAS THEIR ASSIGNMENT .. to do something "non-conformist". So they do thier assignement and get punished for it? Would they have been as severly punished if they were a hetero couple .. I HIGHLY doubt it...

I bet you anything they would. If she stood up on that table and yelled "End **** oppression!" or something gay like that and then made out with some guy, she would probably have gotten the same punishment. Seems like a reasonable punishment to me, anyway.

oh i must have missed the part where their assignment was to disrupt school and break the rules. there are a shi load of things they could have chosen that would not disrupt their school and break the rules, its their own f*****g fault.
and like wheresnws said, i bet if it was a guy and a girl trying to "end **** oppression" they would have gotten in just as much trouble.
keep on thinking everywhere in the world there is a double standard and that everyone in the world is out to get the gays, f*g.

I agree with Abi and REnnol... This punishment wasn't for the "act of disruption". I remember many times in school that people would make out and not get in trouble. I also remember many times in School were people would shout out stuff during Lunch, and guess what, They were in their next class like everyone else.
If you want to give this girl detention, that would be a little more online for her "disruption", but suspending her for anything less than, fighting, verbal abuse of a teacher or student, or token it up in the bathroom (or any other serious offense) Is purely ignorant. And anyone who thinks this is "fair" treatment is a moron.

You're an idiot...
I'd LOVE for someone whose still in high school to reproduce this exact same act but using a heterosexual couple and see what happens just to prove you imbiciles wrong...
I know with 99% certainty I am right.. Why? Because I have lived 30 years as a gay man in America and I have seen and experienced A LOT more of the world.
Anyone who knows me knows I am not one to take the liberal side of pretty much ANY argument. However this is such a blatant example of unfair treatment based soley on **** orientation that I find myself firmly in agreement with my liberal (and usually wrong.. ~wink~) friend

I disagree that I guy/girl exhibiting the same behavior wouldn't have received the same punishment. Although we can't really tell for sure.
But this does go back to my argument over why homosexuality is different than race. One is a behavior. The other is a trait. If we lose our ability to punish objectionable behavior, we become an anarchy.

I just asked my brother who is in highschool, and he said if two people jumped up on a lunch people in lunch for any reason and screamed hey look at us, they would get suspended.
oh and he also added, if two chicks did the same thing at his highschool, they probably wouldnt get suspended because the vice principal is a dyke, lozl.

Stupidity is a trait. If I act on that stupidity then yes...you can put me away.
Being gay is a trait, so you can't be put away for being gay. You can be put away for getting naked in public while in a gay pride parade.

You are correct Mog they broke the rules .. The point is anyone with a smidgen of common sense and worldy knowledge can tell you that if a hetero couple would have broken the rules in the same way the punishment would not have been as severe.. If there was one at all ...
When I was in high school I couldn't turn a corner without seeing hetero couples making out, yes even on stage during school functions ... People "broke the rules" all the time and nothing was done .. People did MUCH worse than what these two women did and got nothing more than detention ...
